The doubt, the feeling of inadequacy, of being too much, asking too much, these all didn’t fit in Minerva’s current life. She had been shown love time and again. Adults cared about her, listened to her. She had never been abused or neglected. But there was something more in her soul, a life of pain, struggle and loneliness. There lay the heart of her insecurities.

“Stay there, I don’t want you to spook it,” he said, standing back up. “Observe me.” She nodded, but he was already gone. His steps didn’t make any noise whatsoever on the blanket of leaves, branches and twisting roots that covered the ground. Would she have found footprints at all, had she been able to discern them? Amongst the many little lives in the forest, soon she realised what he was after: a hare, its aether quick and twitchy, but unmistakable for Minerva, who had seen and felt many when her mother was still her caretaker.

By the time they reached the Stygnerl underground shelter, Mákarios was crying too. Euphemia put another rune array on him and the sound stopped - probably a silence bubble, then. Minerva wondered if her cousin could feel it too, the malevolence in the air, the way it crept on skin like slimy little fingers and embedded itself deep in their flesh. As soon as they entered the shelter, Euphemia gave their names to the guard tasked with keeping track of the civilians assigned to this refuge in case of emergency. A dozen or so families were already present; others were trickling in still. Their fear was almost tangible, like an unwelcome guest there to feast on a nightmare turned reality.

“Alaric. Have you already sent someone to clear the house?” The young man nodded, pushed his glasses up his nose, and handed Éammond a slim folder. “They’ll be done in two hours. You didn’t include it, but I told them to run a cleansing ritual before they leave to rid the place of any traces of aether they’d create while cleaning.” Éammond groaned. He hadn’t thought of that. “Thank you. Do you have the Book of Deeds’ echo?”

“I expected something like this,” Éammond said in a consoling tone, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “You’re pretty small for your age, and, well… strength has never been a strong suit of the Stygnerl. What you can’t build up, you’ll learn to compensate for with your other skills. Physical power isn’t everything, especially for us battlemages.” Minerva wasn’t disappointed with her body’s abilities. Quite the opposite, in fact. She couldn’t tell Éammond about Before, about her broken, weak body, and how this, in comparison, was extraordinary. She was fast, she could twist and turn without any difficulty, all the while keeping her balance on light, confident feet. What more could she ask for? It suited her well.

Minerva breathed in again, trying to identify the scent. It had a light honey base, with wild and flowery overtones, as if someone had picked a spring meadow and turned it into a perfume. The ink was a very dark shade of purple, with an eerie shimmer to it that captured light more than it reflected it.

There was no ‘Minerva’ in the novels she had read. There was a slight possibility that she was a character whose name was changed later in the story, though the novels didn’t mention anything like that either. Much more likely, she was a completely new variable in this universe, something that hadn’t existed before, that wasn’t accounted for. Quite a powerful position, that. A butterfly beating its wings could be enough to summon a tornado leagues away. What about a whole person, with everything that made them unique? In her first life, she’d been decisive, driven, passionate, and had had a strong sense of justice. Could she maintain those traits, mixed in with her knowledge of the original story, and use them to change it?

“Have you ever killed anything?” Orion asked as they came in view of the inn where they would stay for a few days. Minerva wet her lips and rocked on the balls of her feet, then realised what she was doing and made herself stop. “No,” she admitted, willing her voice not to fail her. It seemed to her that Orion’s dark eyes weren’t missing anything of her emotions, despite her hard work to control them. “This changes today.” With that, he changed course, leaving the road for the forest, still as lively and lush as it had been near Endurance. At least the trees were a bit farther apart here, and the thicket easier to navigate on foot. After a few long strides, he stopped and crouched, examining the ground and branches. He took in a sharp breath, and his aether brushed against Minerva’s more intently – seeking out, perhaps.

He stumbled as he crossed the front door and swore when he bounced against the wall. He slid down into a crouch and dropped his head between shaky hands. He had to hold it in, he hadn’t seen his baby yet, hadn’t made sure she was okay. Breaking down had to wait until after that. He staggered to his feet and focused on the simple action of putting one foot in front of the other. He battled his way through the hall and up the stairs, then along the corridor until he reached Minerva’s room. The door was ajar; soft light from a brightstone nightlamp reached his toes, stretching his shadow like wings behind him. She was sleeping face down in her crib, snuggled with her favourite blanket and cat stuffed animal. There was a rash on her neck and face, no doubt from the Wretched One’s aether. The isolation ward around the house was hanging on for dear life. He would have to fix it in the morning. For now it was good enough.
