I finished Shroud recently, and I think some of the best subtle horror is that raised by the Concerns. Humanity could have met dozens or hundreds of alien ecosystems, intelligences, pre-intelligences and we just wouldn’t know if it wasn’t profitable for us to know.

It really does a number on me that I attribute a lot of my ethical sensibilities and values to my religious upbringing and my engagement with Catholicism. My conservative parents told me never to be a bully. My regressive church told me to love EVERYONE as my neighbor. Now I’m a communist.

Like radiation, targeted bullying could have good uses! Generally we don’t want a bunch of excess radiation in the environment, but it’s useful for killing Cancer. I leave the rest of the metaphor as an exercise for the reader.
