Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 8th. On this day in 1975, Canada created the Metric Commission to start the switch from imperial to metric. Happy birthday to the metric system! Canada went the distance — in kilometres!

My backyard yesterday. Lark Harbour hit 19.5°C, the province’s hot spot. St. Paul’s and Bay Roberts reached 19°C, while St. John’s International saw 17.6°C—its earliest 17+°C day on record. The previous earliest was March 31, 1962. A remarkably warm March 21st across much of Newfoundland.

Tonight the hits from March 1967. Canada prepped for Expo '67, the Beatles topped the charts, and Buffalo Springfield hit with a song sparked by L.A.'s Sunset Strip riots, not the Vietnam War; it became a counterculture anthem. Tune in to Radio Bay Roberts at 9:00.

Watching the sunrise today on Signal Hill, in the cold morning air, reminds us how precious life is, how valuable our freedoms are, and how much the people we love make it all worthwhile. Good morning from the eastern edge of the western world.

Took the train from Montreal to Quebec City for an overnight. Stayed at Le Germain and spent the afternoon/evening taking in the Christmas markets. Quebec City does Christmas like nobody’s business.

From William Shakespeare’s play Henry IV, Part 2 (Act III, Scene 1).

“Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.”

The same applies to Santa.
