i haven’t been to the cinema in ireland in about seven years but the weirdest thing was how people just wouldn’t sit still? film was about two hours (with the trailers before the start time!) and people were in and out the whole thing. including a whole group at one point? very strange stuff.

i get thrown by the word ‘mandarin’ in the context of civil servants. i think i associate the words ‘quango’ and ‘mandarin’ because i did a degree in public admin and the first few weeks felt like i was pretending to know english.

i was in a train station in ninh binh and there were these kids practicing their english, this ten year old accuses me of having an english accent and is confused when i play offended. we try to explain the whole irish-english relationship and she interrupts and goes "AH! like vietnam and france!"

i really loved learning about all the little adaptations they made in vietnam after the french left! they didn't have dairy culture (no cows sadly) but they had coconuts and eggs, so shifted to coconut coffee and (surprisingly good) egg coffee. condensed milk a lot too but their pour over is unreal

their coffee is shite but they did bring the culture to vietnam who vastly improved on it

like it’s just two really unfortunate extremes. you could film any dutch person and a good majority of americans and get a similar result, but if you mix in someone who’s poorly adjusted with delusions of fame with a dutch ex military man? lol recipe for disaster
