but god i fucking love being gen-x and getting to go fogey on AIs unholy ass. this brand of luddism is sweet like an apathy-themed soda illustrated by charles burns.

nowadays it takes pretty much all my energy to get through an all-dayer.

yeah, perhaps all those triumphs fueled an occasionally self- harming approach to work, but damn it if the high wasn't worth the low. it was exhilarating to work that way. my last all-nighter was in when i was in my late twenties - for an outline on an episode of the OG "charmed".

This is what I've been saying for MONTHS!

i kinda resent being constantly asked to review things by every app, website, and phone representative with whom i interact. i think a person should be entitled to keep their own counsel on something in this world.

my favorite aspect of andor was how the imperials were felled not by the rebels, but their faith that their innate value to the empire would keep them safe. the rebels didn’t put a gun to lio partagaz’s head, or deedra mero in prison, but rather their belief in palpatine’s patronage. sound familiar?

A friend writes:

I saw someone's post somewhere that talked about how their
nine-year-old and all his friends have started using "That's AI"
instead of "I don't believe you."

Mom: "We're having dinosaur meat for dinner tonight."
Kid: "That's AI."

i truly appreciate that - may your deity of choice bless and keep you!

WE TOOK THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH AWAY
richterscale.bsky.social
trump saying "we took the freedom of speech away" needs to be in every single democrat ad and repeated every time a camera is pointed at a democrat
atrupar.com
Trump: "We took the freedom of speech away because that's been through the courts and the courts said you have freedom of speech, but what has happened is when they burn a flag it agitates and irritates crowds."

Chatbots and AI slop are going to ruin countless brains. Yours doesn't have to be one of them. Study history. Read poetry. Get acquainted with Bach, Shakespeare, George Eliot. In a time when people are rapidly getting dumber, we need communities devoted to the life of the mind.

i’m not surprised that the whole thing is suss… but i see these things like cockroaches in a new york apartment - by the time you see one there’s a thousand in the walls.

the way ai is being used by most of our culture industry is an iron clad guarantee that we will never accomplish this goal.

artists - even the funny ones, even the ones who provide escapism, the low and the high-brow - and those whose job it is to enable what we do owe it to the world to be serious, rigorous, and thoughtful about what we do. we owe it to humanity to be better than what came before us.

as the tech-bro oligarchs come to the inevitable conclusion that all the money and power in the world can’t make a dying biosphere bend to their whim.

the inevitable conclusion of this boondoggle is a million power plants making the planet less and less hospitable to an apathetic humanity resigned to dwelling in god’s waiting room while the planet warms around them…

i know a handful of artists who have managed to use this technology in ways that are genuinely novel, but they are in the vast minority and would have created great things with or without ai. why? because they are true artists. they never needed ai, and they wouldn’t if it went away tomorrow.

if a plagiarism machine is all it was, that would be sad enough but vaguely tolerable, but it’s more than that - it’s a rapidly growing, planet destroying prison whose bars are made of everything humanity has already dreamed up: an instrument of stagnation.
