The relief was too much to hold in, and when she sighed this time—an almost musical note of contentment—Yan laughed. She would miss him, but she hated cars. “I’ll probably be gone a week. I plugged your phone in so it will be charged. Which means no excuse for not checking it. It’s not supposed to snow, but if it does you’re going to have to deal with another human because I arranged for that woman down the street, the one you said was cute and who has the landscaping business, to clear our snow if it dumps on us while I’m gone.” Yan looked thoughtfully up at the sky. “You’ve got all your junk food and if you want something fresher, there are plenty of deer around. Um… I feel like I’m forgetting something.” “When are you leaving?” “Since I finally found you, well, now.” He turned to head back towards the small guest house he had claimed as his own years before. “Wait, what? You said you were going next week. When did you move it up?” “Well, pretty Princess Penlohi, you’ve been napping for about a week.” She looked around and had to admit there was more snow on the ground than there was when she entered the cave. “You didn’t come to yell at me about spying on Grossman?” Yan chuckled. “No, I didn’t. And I’m glad to hear you pronounce his name correctly.” They arrived at his cottage and he grabbed his bag off the tiny porch. “I tried to find you yesterday but didn’t remember the location of your cave until this morning.” “So, you’re leaving now.” She looked up at the sky, spotting a few scraps of blue hidden amongst the grays and white. Like always, it made her want to breathe it all in until she was lost within the clouds.

That dragon your father brought to the kingdom.” “Dwillgo. He was pompous and overbearing and he smelled wrong.” Her mind went back a decade to the day her father, the dragon king, had given her the ultimatum: either marry a dragon of his choosing, or leave the kingdom. Farshen had thought there was no way his daughter would want to leave everything she knew. He had been wrong. “I miss not having to think about these things, but there’s no way I could have married him. It would have ended badly, anyway. He was also little and green. Could you imagine what our children might have looked like? Probably a weird brownish yellow.”

“Recently redid the roofs here and a couple of other buildings. Part of why we took on a tenant,” Yan informed him. Something in the corner caught David’s eye, so he made his way there—turning on the flashlight on his phone as he went. There was something wrapped in a cloth of some sort, and it turned out to be a painting in a gilt frame. The subject was odd, considering the style. The setting was a sumptuous, luxurious bedroom with what looked like silks and velvets. It made David think of the kinds of paintings where a mostly naked, recumbent woman would lie across the bed giving the viewer a sort of come-hither look. But in this painting, the subject was a dragon with golden scales, with fabric strategically draped across its body, and somehow it had the same expression on its face. David held it up for Yan, whose tone sounded like he was cursing but David couldn’t understand it or even identify the language. “That belongs to the previous resident and I should get it back to her,” Yan mumbled and took the painting from David.
