Volunteered at 10y/o’s school today - part of the Watch D.O.G.S. program that encourages dads to participate in the school. Last year, I tore my calf muscle in PE class. This year, I escaped unscathed. Good times!

Languages baked in the bias. Sinister in Latin literally meant left, and they associated the word with evil connotations. The French word gauche meant left and it implied something that's awkward to them. Christian symbolism puts the blessed at the right hand of God (e.g., Matthew 25 imagery), which helped to fix the notion that right = good and left = suspect in the cultural vibe. [1]
Early Modern Era | 1500s - 1700s
Throughout early modern Europe (c. 1500-1700s), negative associations with left-handedness persisted and became entwined with the intense moral and religious discourse of the period. Superstition and demonology led to the belief that being left-handed was a sign of deviance, witchcraft, bad luck, or even a literal pact with the Devil, which fueled persecution during the witch trials. [2]
Folklore depicted the Devil as being left-handed, and it was said that evil spirits lurked over a person's left shoulder. This led to superstitions like throwing salt over the left shoulder to ward off evil. [2]
Late 1700s → 1800s | The Suppression Peak
Best reconstructions from signatures in surveys, school records, and other traces show a decline starting ~1780 and hitting the lowest recorded left-hand rates for cohorts born 1880-1900 (~3%) - а period when schools commonly forced right-hand writing. [3] [4]
Standardized Victorian-era classrooms, with rows of right-handed desks [10][11], and the use of dip pens [12] made writing difficult for left- handers. Teachers often used corporal punishment to force children to switch hands. [13]
Heavy machinery was almost exclusively designed for right-handed operators, making it challenging for left-handers to use and potentially leading to a higher rate of accidents. Cesare Lombroso (1835-1909), considered the "father of criminology," Lombroso theorized that certain physical traits could identify born criminals. He claimed that left-handed people were inherently "primitive and abnormal" and therefore more prone to criminal behavior. [7]
Wilhelm Stekel (1868-1940), a viennese psychoanalyst and former
colleague of Freud, Stekel wrote in 1911 that the "left-hand path" was the "path to crime". He explicitly stated that "the left may signify homosexuality, incest, and perversion". [8]
Cyril Burt (1883-1971) was a british educational psychologist, whose work was later discredited for falsified research, labeled left-handed people as "stubborn, willful, clumsy, and awkward." [9]
1900s | The Rebound
By the mid-to-late 20th century, left-handedness rates rebounded upward, recovering from an all-time low during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This increase reflects growing social acceptance and the end of the widespread, often forced, practice of converting left-handed children to use their right hand. [15] [16] [17]
Late 20th century → Today | Acceptance & Tools
Attitudes soften in the late 20th century towards left handedness. Markets start making left-handed gear. [18] Forcing kids to switch hands is increasingly discouraged by educators and occupational therapists. [19]
Modern prevalence stabilizes around 10.6% worldwide. [20]
Celebrating Lefties
International Left-Handers Day is August 13. It was first marked in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell (Left-Handers International) in the U.S. [22] [23] and then popularized worldwide from 1992 by the UK Left-Handers Club. [24]
