Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1913)

Watched: Dec 3, 2025
Would almost be an okay slapstick comedy, but it's supposed to be a horror. Mr. Hyde comes off like a cross between Frank Reynolds and a Jerry Lewis character. The interstitials do a bad job of explaining what's going on.

A lot to like here. Lazenby gives a more empathetic Bond who's good in a scrap. The skiing stunts are well executed and the avalanche is worth of Emmerich. Diana Rigg gets an active role in the plot. But by god the movie JUST. DRAGS. ON.

This is another perfect movie. The editing is SO good at maintaining pace and upping the stakes. The action is well-conceived and the political situation is compelling if not entirely realistic. 1/

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Great action and banter if you can overlook the pedophilia accusations against the character. Lots of fun moments, and the convoy scene is some of the best action on film. Protagonist is entirely superfluous to the plot.

Primer (2004)

I really like the verisimilitude of how the characters interact with each other, leaving the audience to keep up. It's ultimately not as complicated as I remembered it being on my last viewing, but I still love it even if the climax is fairly pointless.

It's definitely good, but I feel like there's more here than I could appreciate in a single viewing. I'm kind of lost for words on this one.

I liked this better than the original movie. Even though Molina still dies at the end, it felt more earned narratively. The musical numbers made it more lively, but I wish they had gone bigger.

Fun and charming. Obviously some of the plot elements have aged poorly, but for a fantasy movie I found them easier to overlook. The digital comic book idea is terrible lol.

Taxi Driver (1976)

Good performances and a nuanced take on a certain type of radicalization. Travis Bickle would be a hero by the modern political right, despite not really sharing their ideology per se. I didn't like the ending where Betsy seems charmed by his crimes.

Gremlins (1984)
★★★½

Pretty fun movie with some great creature effects. The spectrum of hijinx that the gremlins get up to is extremely broad, from eating a ton of candy all the way to just casual murder, which leads to some good comedic bits.

You Only Live Twice (1967)

An absolute nonsense plot with lengthy setup segments that are later ignored or contradicted entirely. A terrible movie even before you get to the racism. The set design, however, was very cool, especially in the volcano base.

I liked this more than I remembered, having watched it before, but that's not saying much. It has a couple of funny bits. The underwater sequences are technically impressive but also unbelievably boring.

She's Gotta Have It (1986)

A great film about polyamory and women's sexual agency with a hell of a fake out ending. Lee's direction allows Nola to be sexual and erotic without being hypersexualized.

Frankenstein (1931)

Changing the character from a sympathetic creation to a murderous beast really diminishes the heart of the story. The prosthetics are great and Karloff does what he can to bring some pathos to the monster, but it's not enough to overcome the script.

The Man Who Laughs (1928)

The prosthesis that Veidt wears is pretty cool. The beginning and climax go hard, but in between felt very dragged out. It's nice to see a climax centered around class solidarity saying fuck the cops.

Triangle of Sadness (2022)

Wanted to like this more than I actually did. The premise could have benefited from being a show rather than a movie, as the pacing felt off. Some great moments such as between the captain and the shit seller; or the grenade manufacturer. 1/

I'm a sucker for a novel film structure and this one has that in spades. It's an interesting meditation on causality and the impacts (good and bad) we have on the people in our lives, intentionally or otherwise.

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Epic in scale, and an impressive achievement in cinematography. Sadly, I felt like often I was missing some context the film assumed I had going in. O'Toole's gives an inscrutable performance, leaving me guessing at his motivations.

Goldfinger (1954)

Gert Fröbe gives a really fun performance as the titular villain, but the shot-to-shot editing is confusing and the sexism is off-the-charts. This isn't a Bond movie so much as a movie Bond is present for where he does nothing except cheeky hijinks and rape.

A while back I was discussing this style of writing with a friend of mine who's a physics prof and she has a colleague who writes emails like this. I think it's a fundamentally fascist style of writing that is incapable of empathy and universalizes the writer's experiences as objective facts.

My Dinner with Andre (1981)

Fast-paced conversation full of some very interesting, yet unresolved, ideas. The novel structure runs the risk of being dull and losing the audience's attention, but the compelling and charming performances keep that from happening.

Three Amigos! (1986)

A fun concept, reasonably-well executed. Some good comedy bits, but the more fantastical elements like the singing bush and the invisible swordsman felt out of place. Could have done without the portrayal of nearly every Mexican being covered in filth.

Much better than the previous film. Some really interesting cinematography, especially in the train sequence where the close-quarters fight choreography was very well-shot. Grant was an effectively intimidating nemesis. Drags a bit at the end.
