UPDATE: From the original poster of the letter on FB:
I just now got off the phone with Allan Schappert, the author of this letter. He’s not on social media. When I shared how his letter has travelled, he said, “I’m gobsmacked.” He wrote to share his story, and perhaps to let other veterans know they’re not alone, and he’s amazed that he touched a nerve. “The pen is mightier than the sword!” exclaimed this pilot who once wielded the nuclear sword at the controls of an American B52. Whew. He thanks you, Peter, for sharing his words. Allan and I have plans to grab a beer together this weekend.

In March 1945, the United States War Department created an 8-page fact sheet about fascism for the Army to distribute to soldiers. Wow. This should be mandatory reading now:
