I think part of this comes from the rise of weight loss medication in culture. One of the things new patients are counseled on is the need to increase protein consumption to not lose muscle mass.

This gets laundered into “protein good for health” alongside the “backlash” against vegetables.

There are also protein Pop-Tarts.

Yep, I have no idea why it's taking so long or if it's even going to happen. The complete public silence from the ORCA team is even more frustrating.

They're supposedly testing contactless payment card acceptance but that doesn't help for using passes like many of us do.

I'm not going to throw in the towel on a mayor many of us worked hard to get elected, just because it's going a little slower than I'm impatiently waiting for. Comparisons to Mamdani are apt but I have confidence we'll get there.

to allow implementing them did not make it out of committee in 2023.

(Personally, I don't really care if Washington has them or not. I downloaded this one to try the experience but do not plan to use it at airports or anywhere else.)

ORCA and their third-party contractor have not seen fit to release Apple Wallet integration, nor explain to us why we don't have it. The only response is "no comment".

As for digital IDs in Washington State, you'd need to ask our legislature. DoL is not allowed to issue them and a single bill...

Exactly. The main difference is in the rhetoric, imho. If you're saying "we are going to take steps A, B, then C or possibly 3 depending on how those first two comes out", that's incrementalism that works. But too many places it's turned into "just stop griping and wait for step A geez!"
January 12, 2026 at 8:25 PM
My mildest take is incrementalism is fine...as long as it is incrementing.

Problem is, we forgot how to do that second bit and that means we now have an entire generation--and are raising the *second* and *third* generations--of people who don't trust it and won't follow it for good reasons.

Well, I use "you should watch Rare Earth (sign up with this link)" as a reason for people to pay Nebula's screamingly cheap subscription cost, so I appreciate you being there
January 12, 2026 at 4:23 AM
Just watching every sports broadcast triumvirate of:

"The sanctity of the game!" vs "If you have a problem with excessive gambling, know your limits!" vs "LOOK AT ALL OF THESE ODDS SO MANY ODDS THEY'RE NOT EVEN THEY'RE ODDS!"
January 12, 2026 at 3:55 AM
If it's not too inside baseball, how does Nebula viewership fare? I am a devoted subscriber to that platform so that's where I watch, at least.
January 12, 2026 at 3:49 AM
I came to @nebula.tv for Jet Lag: The Game (and the extended Wendover Productions Universe), but I stay for #RareEarth, @legaleagle.tv, @tldrnews.bsky.social, @nerd4cities.bsky.social, and @citybeautiful.nebula.tv.

I am nowhere near cool enough to play anything on camera that Ben also plays on camera

That's been my experience in other places except Safeway, and now Saar's. I was specifically told I could not have a backpack in there.
January 11, 2026 at 2:43 AM
Funny enough they let all of these people in who got there by car and I have been told that cars can hold the entire contents of a shopping cart, maybe even two or three!

(Which is, of course, not the point but I also will never understand Supermarket Manager Logic)
January 10, 2026 at 10:57 PM
I have encountered this sign at two different Safeway stores (this one is from the one on East Madison), and also been told both times that yes, they mean it.

(The QFC near me has one that only lists the first two items.)
January 10, 2026 at 10:45 PM
Agreed. I had even picked up a basket (yay for having them) and the security employee followed me into the store to tell me my backpack isn’t welcome.
January 10, 2026 at 10:22 PM
(This is, at least for me, a new policy. I’ve been there twice before, both times late at night, without issue.)

I won’t shop at stores that get touchy about my backpack. Even leaving at a desk is unacceptable because I’m usually carrying important things that they won’t promise to care for.

I...clearly do not know how to use tagging because I thought that's what I typed, whoops!

Time to delete and do the right tag.
