Open Decklists is a project to share decks for constructed Magic formats.

...With some hot takes sprinkled in
The time to speculate into modern unbans is not the week of the B&R announcement. It's the quiet period in between.

Retro Deathrite Shaman at $4 is where I'm in. And if I play them or sell them, I don't really care.

One area I've been bullish on buying lately are pre-modern cards. There is a lot of nostalgia for the format (myself included) and the old versions of the cards are almost a psuedo-reserved list.

Sure the cheapest copy of a card is playable, but the players want originals.

If you're working on getting daily wins on MTG Arena, Brawl is the way to go.

Play some salty commander and people concede at the absolute first sign of trouble.

I have some mid Ragavan deck and often when people get hit they just concede. Sure, you do you.

Who doesn't love a good thread roasting a cheater and overall scumbag?
Thread about cheating, angleshooting, and other abusive behavior from Noah Rabin, whose round 14 opponent was wrongly disqualified at the Regional Championship, according to spectators. 🧵 #mtg

Planeswalkers in retro frames ain't it

Let's talk Gearhulks from Drifty set.

These will be standard legal for 3 years. I suspect all of them will have a moment in the sun in that time.

However, the cheaper, the better.

This Selesnya one entirely depends on how good the targets are.

I think it's good. And it's a cool cube card.

Big cube fan, but goodness is the Chromatic cube some of the worst slop magic I've ever played. Not for me.

Let's talk about Exhaust as a mechanic.

I'm actually pretty surprised they printed this mechanic. Let's talk about why ->

I was never bullish on Innistrad Remastered...

But I'm especially low on how the set will do given that Aetherdrift previews are happening right now overlapping with the sets upcoming release on Friday.

Not the best timing.

With standard being so hot right now, it's the season to sell all the cards that are up.

But it's also a good time to check into modern cards and scoop up anything that could be underpriced while it's not the hot format.

Here's a few I have my eye on:

A deck this pretty deserves a moment to admire
Starting 2025 off strong with 44 at @themanavault.bsky.social’s January Legacy 1k. Came back with tried and true ABCDoomsday to make Top 8. Came in fairly blind to the new meta and probably over prepared for Oops. Sheo just just be barrowgoyf. Excellent vibes as always.

There are a number of cards I am bullish on for Foundations, but what is holding me back from purchasing them is sheer unknown of the print volume.

5 years is a long time to be in standard, and in print presumably. Is a $3 rare worth buying to hope it goes to $10? (Leyline Axe, for example)
January 3, 2025 at 7:05 PM
Was early in on Stormchaser's Talent. In at $0.75 and out at $14.

Talent's have been an absolute hit across the entire set, lucky enough to capitalize on a few different ones.

Brainstorm - U - Draw 3 put back 2
Brainsurge - 2U - Draw 4 put back 2

What could the 1U version look like?
January 3, 2025 at 6:08 PM
In at $12 each.

Out at $45 each.

Recognized this one at release. I typically don't go deeper than a playset of cards I want to play/spec on, and the Eye followed that routine. Card delivered!

It's been a while since WotC took over commander, and I suspect January will be their first announcement of... something.

Maybe not right away, but I bet they have a goal to unban JLo and Crypt announcement paired with a reprint of both.

Will they unban them? What about the Others?
December 23, 2024 at 6:47 AM
With Jegantha banned in multiple formats, let's acknowledge the best companion design...
December 18, 2024 at 3:47 AM
Would it be a wide-open modern format without an Asmo brew?
December 17, 2024 at 11:14 PM
Snapcaster Mage and Splinter Twin. What year is it!?

Whatever it is, it's awesome.
December 17, 2024 at 11:10 PM
Woah, some SPICE on this Rakdos Affinity deck for Modern.

Imskur is a pretty sweet card in this shell. Ideally a 2 mana 5/5 that draws 2-3 cards and can fling stuff to the dome for 7 damage?
December 17, 2024 at 11:03 PM
From the Disgruntled Elk himself, Hammer with Mox Opal might be back on the menu to be a turn faster.

To make space for Opal and Kappa Cannoneer with the full set of 0 mana spells, there are No Giver of Runes, No Surge main, no Forge Anew, fewer Saga + Stoneforge targets.
December 17, 2024 at 10:57 PM
I yearn for the day that D&T is a good modern deck.

I imagine that flickering Overlord with either Phelia or Flickerwisp is a pretty sick synergy.
December 17, 2024 at 10:51 PM
Faithless looting packaged with Archon of Cruelty / Persist / Creativity.

Lots of Meltdowns and Leyline of the Void showing up in sideboards.
December 17, 2024 at 10:44 PM
Faithless Looting unlocks a lot of power alongside Burning Inquiry in this style of deck.

Bowmaster took a big hit with it's primary target (the Ring) being banned, but still is sick with Burning Inquiry.
December 17, 2024 at 10:36 PM
A new version of Breach combo with both Faithless Looting and Mox Opal.

Let's be honest, almost this entire deck is a who's who of cards that could arguably be banned.
