Nerd hobbyist who hates Weird Nerd Culture. The biggest problem I have with RPGs is that I really get into the “RP” part and wind up burning out on the game before finishing. Ask me how many hundreds of hours I’ve dumped into Skyrim without finishing it.
Oh, so it was a “have loud thoughts about the Star Wars Prequels” kinda Wednesday night for me, then I guess.
Much about the prequels could’ve been improved by having Anakin be approximately the same age as Luke. Such as not having the romantic leads of your film being a 9 year old playing a 9 year old and an 18 year old playing a 14 year old.

The thought that there could be a large group of people with deep emotional investment in Gen X Nostalgia: The Television Series in the year 2026 bums me out somewhat.
one of the strangest fandom culture moments is going down right now; a section of the Stranger Things fanbase have convinced themselves that the last episode wasn't the *real* finale, & that there are cryptic clues hidden in the background of the series hinting at a secret *real* finale to air today

Lining up millennials for the Boomerfication nostalgia machine.
So what was Stranger Things about in the end anyway?

Stranger Things is over (almost certainly only for now). And the ending of the show…definitely is a thing that exists. Choices were available. Decisions were made.

I appreciate the last 20 minutes or so. They pulled that off really well I think, regardless of how I felt pretty much since season 2.

I’m not a great writer or anything, but one thing I want to try in 2026 is reviewing content I watch more formally. It’ll require me to put a bit of thought into it and not just post a long thread (and/or it’ll be a great counterpart to love-watching certain kinds of things).

I am very ready for Stranger Things to be done. It just tried really hard to do so much and it really sort of fell flat withe the constant stakes-raising and reworking the same stuff.

Even with some iconic moments, there’s just so much that felt like filled. And so many cool side stories unexplored

I can understand making a ripoff of Minority Report. It’s been 23 years, that’s a fair amount of time for it to reach classic status. I can understand tweaking the premise to include the stupidity of replacing sci-fi precognition with commentary on AI.

But how the hell do the visuals look that bad?

We spoke to a dozen professional concept artists who are currently or have previously worked in game development about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs any easier.

Zero said it did. Most said it made things harder.

Concept Artists Say Generative AI References Only Make Their Jobs Harder
“The ‘early ideation stages’, when worlds are being fleshed out by writers and artists, are literally crucial to the development of a game’s vision,” said one artist.

Has anyone compared the Tidal recommendation engine versus Pandora. I’m not interested in Spotify with all their BS, and apandora always was the best at discovering new music for me. How are Tidal’s desktop apps?

Watching people play great old games for the first time is very much my equivalent of that XKCD of the 10 new people who get to learn about something “everyone knows”.

Rewatching The Last of Us and…man, S1E3 “Long, Long Time” is such a beautiful piece of work. True art. Just an absolutely glorious self-contained story that served so little a role in the “greater narrative” of the show, but helps make it more than just a video game adaptation. It show amazing care…

Legitimately excited for all the new Valve console stuff. Mostly because I spent years arguing online about how bad their original Steam Machine idea was and everything they’re doing right now is pretty much exactly what I was arguing they should be doing.

I think you can do cool things with world building. I also think you can make good things bad by trying to explain everything. If your story is veering into Glup Shitta storylines, it is time to talk to someone who likes your story a normal amount and ask them if they desperately crave understanding
i know that all stranger things does anymore is score own goals but *explaining the upside down* is truly a sign that they have lost their fucking minds
The Duffer Brothers reveal two questions that will be answered in ‘Strangers Things 5’

1️⃣ “What is the Upside Down truly?”

2️⃣ “Why was Will Byers taken in S1?”

This is so unsustainably dumb

Microsoft desperately needs to be split into two companies. For the obvious monopolistic ones but also because it wouldn’t be possible for them to do shit like this if they didn’t have people who’ve never played a video game making decisions for the video game division
LMAOOO WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE NEW XBOX HANDHELD COMES WITH MICROSOFT TEAMS AND ONEDRIVE INSTALLED??? this is the fucking goofiest company in games

TRON is a concept I’m prepared to enjoy. And it always has the potential for awesome visuals. But I can’t really tell you the last movie that got me to theaters on spectacle alone. This isn’t 2012.

It could be an interesting kids movie. But they want it to be more and it just…isn’t. It’s fukn TRON.

ME: Slay the Spire.

CHOTINER: And you play it on the computer?

ME: Yeah. Well, I also have it on my phone. I played another 300 hours.

CHOTINER: And these other games in your Steam library. Have you finished them?

ME: Now hold on a second,

Welp. Not walking this back now.

My only concern is that it may read that I dropped the service because they brought him back, since their feedback form didn’t give me an option to explain why I was cancelling service.

I don’t trust them yet though.
Guess it’s time to join the exodus from Disney services. Including any games I might otherwise buy (KOTOR for yet another platform, probably).

Any games from Disney franchises are obviously out, but now I gotta go track down a list of developers, publishers, etc. that I gotta avoid by association.

I think this is mostly true. The one thing I’d note is that other books/movies/series may not have the ubiquity that allows kids to bond over it with other kids.

That’s not inherently bad. But I recall the kids whose could only enjoy religious books/music/media and it made their life much harder.
Every single thing you like and admire and find illuminating or thrilling about HP exists in other books, movies, & series EXCEPT the birth-to-death-scale entertainment-industrial infrastructure of merch and licensing

No, Microsoft, I do not want to fucking talk out loud to my computer. Especially when you’re feeding it to a shitty plagiarism machine that fucks the planet.

What I do very much want is for you to pull your heads out of your ass long enough to realize you’d be better off as two different companies.

Thinking about KOTOR I and II, and I think it’s interesting that while I tend to hate being pushed to be “full” evil in games, I had a lot of fun with those games

I think that’s because the Star Wars universe pushes an awkward binary, such that it’s hard to write a story without it. But they tried.
