Today's expedition was to the Wainhouse Tower near Halifax. At 253 ft it's the UK's tallest folly, & 369 steps take you up to what Yorkshire folk call a grand view.

A less successful piece of public sculpture from Grimsby: "Human Mumuration". It's an interesting idea with local people having posed for the silhouettes, but from a distance it looks like graffiti, and close up lacks any real impact. It's high up - presumably to avoid vandalism - which doesn't help

A visit to Grimsby yesterday. First, some public sculpture: the Fisherman's Memorial, erected in memory of "the fishermen of Grimsby who sailed to distant waters never to return".

Photo from yesterday's walk of Scout Hall, near Shibden. Reputedly a "calendar house". 1 end obviously weatherproof and occupied; the remainder is a work in progress. It was built by a silk merchant: obsessed with flying, he died after launching himself from a local hill on homemade wings.
