How’s your Sunday going?

I’m rewatching the first season of #StrangerThings with my kids to get ready for season 5, and I really hope the final season gives this science king a time to shine. (Every time he’s on screen, I remember my 12th grade physics teacher, Mr. Dappen, who let us get away with all sorts of shenanigans.)

Stop scrolling and post two characters who bring you happiness (if you feel like it)

When you watch a “classic” IFD ninja film from the ’80s, you know to go in with low expectations, but even so, this was particularly underwhelming.

My ★½ review of Joseph Lai’s “Cobra Against Ninja” (1987): opus.ing/diet/495722

When I was a kid, I thought the Lazer Tag pistol, as seen in the “Lazer Tag Academy” cartoon, was the coolest.

This exploration of the Satanic Panic of the ’80s and ’90s is a fascinating account of a bizarre moment in U.S. history — and a potent warning against obsessing over perceived evils “out there.”

My ★★★★ review of @mikecosper.bsky.social’s “Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” (2025): opus.ing/diet/489125

Looks and feels as epic as anything streaming today. But the season’s narrative feels fractured and prone to revelations that make no sense whatsoever.

My ★★★ review of “Foundation,” season three: opus.ing/diet/485851

I discovered a handful of “Comic Shop News” issues from the early ’90s while cleaning up my office. They instantly took me back to high school and spending my Saturdays perusing the racks at Dragon’s Lair and Cosmic Comics in #Omaha.

There’s always a tweet. Is there any hypocrisy that Trump and his allies won’t fully embrace?

It’s a treat to see Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, and Pierce Brosnan strut their stuff. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t give them very much to work with.

My ★★★ review of Chris Columbus’s “The Thursday Murder Club” (2025): opus.ing/diet/487720

If you want to pay tribute to #RobertRedford (RIP), you could do far worse than watch 1992’s “Sneakers.”

Not even the presence of actors like Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Irons can save this movie from its own tepid-ness.

My ★★½ review of Francis Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow” (2018): opus.ing/diet/487444
September 16, 2025 at 2:59 AM
Although I was never not entertained, I found it devoid of any nail-biting tension, which one would expect from an acclaimed spy novel.

My ★★★ review of Jason Matthews’ “Red Sparrow” (2013): opus.ing/diet/485853

Real ones will know and understand.

A sequel that does nothing original, but rather, just recycles everything we saw in its predecessor.

My ★½ review of Timo Tjahjanto’s “Nobody 2” (2025): opus.ing/diet/485029
September 10, 2025 at 12:37 AM
Though its story is a bit slight, it’s worth reading for the crisp, clean artwork that brings the modernist architecture and coastal setting to life.

My ★★★½ review of @odpomery.bsky.social’s “Victory Point” (2024): opus.ing/diet/485016
September 8, 2025 at 12:53 PM
Unfortunately, it never quite comes together in a truly cohesive manner, but rather, feels like three or four movies struggling to fit inside the runtime of just one.

My ★★★ review of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” (2025): opus.ing/diet/474895

I like the new “woke” #CrackerBarrel logo. Though not as down-home-y as the original logo, it exudes a certain retro, '70s-ish vibe — mainly via the colors and typography — that feels apropos for the franchise.

We already live in the dumbest timeline. Why does it have to keep getting dumber and dumber?
August 20, 2025 at 4:53 AM
I enjoyed the novel’s depiction of Hell as a paperwork and metrics-obsessed corporate bureaucracy replete with sycophants and consultants, and that was about it.

My ★★★ review of Henry H. Neff’s “The Witchstone” (2024): opus.ing/diet/482168

A wonderful — though sadly all-too-relevant — Superman story that tackles bigotry and racism with wit, charm, and nuance *and* serves as a great Superman origin story.

My ★★★★½ review of @geneluenyang.bsky.social and @gurihiru.bsky.social’s “Superman Smashes the Klan” (2020): opus.ing/diet/480461
August 8, 2025 at 1:51 AM
This deeply researched account of how scholars and librarians helped defeat the Nazis — and create modern espionage — is a fascinating look at a side of history most of us probably know nothing about.

My ★★★★ review of @elysegraham.bsky.social’s “Book and Dagger” (2024): opus.ing/diet/479396
August 6, 2025 at 3:25 AM
Not as good as season one, but still a fascinating/disquieting look at the evangelical Christian subculture and how a sincere desire to serve the Lord can be coopted.

My ★★★½ review of Nicole Newnham and Cori Shepherd Stern’s #ShinyHappyPeople: A Teenage Holy War (2025): opus.ing/diet/479280
August 5, 2025 at 6:33 PM
I enjoyed seeing Richard Norton (RIP) in a lead role but this #MadMax rip-off never escapes the limitations of its budget, nor is it bizarre or crazy enough to be all that memorable.

My ★★½ review of Cirio H. Santiago’s “Equalizer 2000” (1987): opus.ing/diet/479255

I was fortunate enough to see Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran” in the theater earlier today. It is, of course, a masterpiece. But what was *really* cool was hearing the audience get caught up in the 40yo film and react to its twists, turns, and tragedies. Just more proof that great art transcends time.
