[3/4] Les historiens estiment le choc à une intensité de 8 - gravement dommageable - dans la zone épicentrale. Dans l'église de Soiron, certains des dégâts causés à l’époque sont encore visibles aujourd’hui.

[2/4] Si la faille responsable de ce séisme fait encore l'objet de débats, on soupçonne son origine dans la zone de faille de #Hockai. Les archives historiques font également état de 7 répliques plus importantes dans les semaines qui ont suivi, mais leur magnitude demeure cependant inconnue.

Il y a exactement 333 ans aujourd'hui, à 14h15 environ, un important #tremblementdeterre de magnitude 6 ¼ frappait la ville de #Verviers. À ce jour, il s'agit du plus grand tremblement de terre connu qui a eu lieu dans notre pays.

Vandaag 18 september rond 14u15 vond exact 333 jaar geleden een zware aardbeving plaats in #Verviers. Deze aardbeving had een magnitude van 6 ¼. Tot op heden is dit de grootste aardbeving in ons land die ooit plaatsvond.

Historians estimate that the shock had an intensity of 8 – severely damaging – in the epicentral zone. Damage caused to the church of Soiron, is still visible today.

While the fault responsible for this earthquake remains a subject of debate, geomorphologists suspect that the Verviers earthquake originated along the #Hockai fault zone. Historical records also mention seven larger aftershocks in the weeks that followed, but their magnitudes remain unknown.

Exactly 333 years ago today, around 14:15, a major earthquake with magnitude 6¼ struck the town of #Verviers (Liège province, Belgium). To date, this event remains the largest earthquake ever observed in our country.

De Webb-telescoop heeft onlangs nieuwe details onthuld in de kern van de Vlindernevel, NGC 6302. De nieuwe ontdekking is gepubliceerd in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, waaraan Peter van Hoof van @orb-ksb.bsky.social heeft bijgedragen. www.astro.oma.be/nl/...

The James Webb telescope recently revealed new details in the core of the Butterfly Nebula, NGC 6302. The new discovery is published in a Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society science paper, to which Peter van Hoof from the @orb-ksb.bsky.social contributed. www.astro.oma.be/en/...

Three pictures of the Butterfly Nebula, which show a stellar object that seems to have two wings and a narrow body, hence the name. The three pictures show the planetary nebula in different colours.

A peaceful Friday afternoon as seen from my office’s window at the @orb-sb.bsky.social in Brussels. Solar observations are still done regularly, as opposed to night sky observations which are impossible due to the high levels of light pollution in the city. 🔭🧪
