Well, part of it is that MSA isn’t where policy happens, so their observed variation < actual.

But the bigger issue for policy inference is that every US jurisdiction has highly restrictive land use, and reforms have barely made a dent. The yimby policy space is mostly unobserved.

Tbh they walk back their claims so much in the responses and the FAQ that this is an irresponsible conclusion. Their paper is about the minimal cross-msa variation in supply constraints in the US, just that! No policy implications should be drawn.

Productivity improvements in one sector increase relative prices in other sectors. Will LLMs build more housing? Work on shrimp boats? No! So higher real incomes from ai will in part be eaten up by higher real costs for rent, food, and more. Essentially immaterial for inflation.
