I agree that you can criticize art. My point was that praising an artist (such as Agatha Christie) but simultaneously calling her a hack is unhelpful elitism.

Every TV show HBO ever made was made for the explicit purpose of making money. Are they all inferior art?
Avatar (2009) was a passion project created by a single auteur over 15 years. Does that make it eligible to be superior art in your eyes? Or is it ineligible because it made too much money?

The distinction you’re making serves to make people think that they’re better than others if they enjoy Crime and Punishment, but has very little other use.

What does “hack” mean to you? They made great art. Art doesn’t have to “challenge the limits of the medium” or whatever to be worthwhile. It doesn’t have to tear out the soul of the creator.
