These are two different arguments: one says it is a general guideline, the other says it is an absolute truth. These are not congruent statements, and that's because alignment as a system is stretched thin trying to both divide the greater D&D cosmos and character expression.

Also, 90% of complaints about alignment boil down to - "I didn't understand the Alignment section, and I'm going to be incredibly mad about it!"

Here's a hint: There's a reason that even old school D&D took great pains to specify it was only a general guideline.
