I guess all I can offer to our beloved American colleagues: do reach out to your European colleagues if you want to informally chat about potential research job opportunities.

We are deeply sorry about the surreal havoc you are experiencing right now.

Devastated to see the NSF postdoctoral research fellowship in biology archives. This is a transformative creative opportunity and a path to the professorship for many (including myself). Postdocs are highly trained and often in the newest techniques which spur innovation.

Urbanization enhances biodiversity loss. Yet sometimes cities may *paradoxically* shelter species threatened by other components of global change

We studied if urban areas are sheltering an endangered iconic lizard 🦎 from a rapidly spreading predator 🐍 in Ibiza👇

Strategic urban planning is vital to preserve these relict Ibiza wall lizard populations. Citizen science enhanced our capacity to monitor the invasion across large areas, providing real-time data that can inform adaptive management and help preserve this iconic, keystone Mediterranean species.

We run simulations that rule out the possibility that urban areas act merely as “ecological traps” where populations cannot persist without immigration. Under low anthropogenic mortality, invaded urban populations are self-sustaining.
oriollapiedra.bsky.social
Urban areas seem to act as an ecological filter for snakes:
🚗 Traffic is an effective barrier for snakes to colonize urban areas, 👩‍👩‍👧‍👦 humans actively detect and remove snakes more often, while urban microhabitats 🏡 (rock walls, gardens, parks) provide favorable conditions for Ibiza wall lizards.
oriollapiedra.bsky.social
To study the persistence of urban lizard populations, we surveyed 144 urban and peri-urban sites across the island. Although invasive snakes strongly reduce lizard abundance, lizards persist well in intensively urbanized long-invaded areas
oriollapiedra.bsky.social
Endemic Ibiza wall lizards once thrived island-wide 🏝️.

But since the accidental arrival of the invasive horseshoe whip snake in 2003 via imported olive trees, lizard populations are being rapidly extirpated.

Could urban areas be their last stronghold?

NSF grant terminations are disproportionately affecting underrepresented scientists. 58% of canceled grants have women PIs, despite making up only 34% of awards. 17% of canceled grants have Black PIs (versus 4% of the pool). Hispanic and disabled PIs are twice as likely to have NSF grants canceled.
