This is kind of a myth. People like to call hybrid powertrains complicated and over engineered but they’re actually quite a bit simpler than conventional ICE powertrains due to the lack of a gearbox. There’s a reason why Priuses make it to high mileage

Yeah the Gen 2 volt small block engine gets called “Atkinson cycle” in places but I think it wasn’t designed as an Atkinson ICE in the same way the Prius’ was.

One of the grand ironies of owning a Chevrolet Volt in California is that you don’t actually save all that much money charging the car versus burning gas. Electricity is just too expensive here lol

Maybe biased as a new Volt owner but there’s just so much more optimization going on in a machine that merges three different sources of power hooked together in a planetary gear system that seamlessly transitions between several discrete power generation/storage/regeneration modes
