#Gardening Q: I'm growing butternut squash, planted at the beg of June (Zone 6a). I'm wondering abt the timeline to maturity AFTER pollination (on average, as I'm aware different conditions can affect growth). What is the latest I can let a fruit set so it still has time to mature before frost? 🎃🌱

Sighted the first squash bug eggs of the year yesterday. Today and every day hereafter, when I go to my garden, I go forth to do battle. If I'm victorious, we will feast on zucchini bread and roasted butternut squash in the winter.

I got stung by a bee tonight and I'm taking it real personal. I was out in the pollinator-friendly garden that I planted specifically for them, so you'd think they'd be more chill about my being in there trying to weed. Call that bee-trayal.

I got a call from my health insurance company purportedly offering a "free screening" w "their" nurses to provide "the best medical care." I told them my medical care should be overseen by my physician and not by my insurance company and I frankly don't want their input--remove me from your list.

Memorial Garden Update: Transplanted hollyhocks, goldenrod, sky blue aster, white and pink peonies, bee balm, columbine (!!!), and some kind of sedum (rupestre?). I just planted some sunflowers behind the trellis, and I've got some hyssop seeds to sow at some point.

You won't ever catch me stanning for a politician, but I do have to say that I'm continuously impressed by Pritzker actually *DOING* legislative work. He's at least TRYING something new instead of complaining about the status quo yet changing nothing. I respect him for walking the walk.

I'm honestly thrilled by this. I'm currently paying out of pocket for one of my medications because insurance wanted me to fail TWO others before I could try it. I'm *extremely* lucky & privileged that I can afford to do so, and I support a reform of this system.

I got my fence partly fixed, planted zinnias, marigolds, dill, tomatoes (Roma), 3 zucchini, and beans. Transplanted one of the lambs' ear. About half of the strawberries survived and my pear tree is putting out buds. The raspberry canes still look like sticks though...

Work has gone off the rails today but since the consequences are minor it's reached that stage of acceptance where every new issue is greeted with, "... Sure, that might as well happen." *yakety sax plays in the background*

My little pear tree is officially in the ground 🍐🌱 I'm brand new to growing trees, so he and I are (hopefully) going to be learning a lot together!!!

In the grand tradition of "Midwesterners watching events outdoors" I'm posted up at the office in a lawn chair with a cold beverage to watch the eclipse 🌑

I needed some help this garden season so I hired Classic Landscaping to put in some new beds and they are exactly what I wanted. I'm so excited to get them filled! First one will have transplanted hollyhocks from the farm, second will be lambs ear, and the third will be a memorial flower garden.

I stopped by the Illinois Fiber Festival 2024 today and picked up a few skeins of yarn from local vendors. I thought it was a really cute event!

Our power went out last night around 11pm. I put on extra clothes and blankets and grabbed a couple cats to contain everyone in one room. I went to sleep and woke up with both of them sleeping on me. Power came back on around 3:30 but it's still pretty chilly inside.

Does anyone have recommendations for seed companies who send physical catalogues in the mail? Veggies, flowers, etc. I'm open to anything that grows! Thank you. :) 🌱

We're going to get our first hard frost this weekend, so the giant basil plant🌱 at my office had to come up and has been hung up to dry.

I ordered an arrangement for my Aunt from the CU Flower House, and it's absolutely beautiful. The colors in the photo don't do it justice. 💐
