121 years ago #OnThisDay, Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaevich was born.

Pierre Gilliard, the Swiss-born French tutor to the Tsar's children, recalled that Alexei "...thoroughly enjoyed life — when it let him — and was a happy, romping boy... He had very quick wits and a keen and penetrating mind."

128 years ago on this day, Grand Duchess Tatiana was born.

On her nineteenth birthday, the Tsar wrote:

“...God bless Tatiana, may God let her always stay as good, loving, and patient a girl as she is now and be our consolation when we are old!”

Happy birthday Tatiana!

A dress belonging to Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, from the workshop of Brizak, c1912-1914

Satin, silk, and delicately embroidered lace, 140cm in length.

In photos the dress appears a pale green, whilst those who have seen it in person describe it as very light blue.

Alix’s sister, May, who passed from diphtheria, was the youngest child in the family - certainly not her older sister.

Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna “could play by ear… the most difficult accompaniments at sight, and her touch on the piano was delightful. She sang prettily in a mezzosoprano. She was lazy at practising, but when the spirit moved her she would play by the hour."
