Author. Horticulturist. Big Dreamer. Bard.
I am here to make things a little better every day. Work beside me, walk beside me, or get out of my way.
Today's my birthday, so I'm reflecting on life and things as they stand. Perfect life? Nah. Screwed some stuff up. Got my heart broke. Got some things to work on.
But a good life that I'm proud of? New opportunities? Good things coming?
Oh hell yes.
Okay life. Another year. Let's go.

Hunh. Having an odd moment that only other #creativewriters and #solarpunk s will get.

I've got one book in a solarpunk series done, and it's getting finishing touches. Today it hit me: the next book is going to be a sweet, kind, healing story. About reintroducing prairie dogs. Of all the things...

Counting a little win today: I got a great critique on my current solarpunk manuscript, and this is the first time in my career that my reaction was 'oh AWESOME this fixes that annoying weird story element, let's write!' and not 'oh no so much work so much fail'.
Good brain! *pats*

Finally, a set is ready and goes into the candle closet for burning through the year!
The full process takes a week of casual work. Start the hot plate, go upstairs, do a thing, go down, do some wicks, pour some wax, then go watch a movie. Perfect work for the very early days of spring!

Another set is waiting on the finishing, basing (making the bases flat) and wick trimming that finishes the process)

My candle making gear is my college hotplate and kitchen utensils, long retired from kitchen duty. While one set of candles sets in their molds, another set is getting their wicks and being put aside to cure. (usually one set is poured and one set wicked and cured in a day)

As part of the season, I begin a work of light on Imbolc. Through the year, I burn candles in bowls. The wax from each bowl is saved in an out of the way storage area when the candles burn down. Come Imbolc, the wax begins the process of becoming next year's candles.

If I find a new publisher by May, I'll offer them a new YA solarpunk series, book 1 completed and cover supplied. If not, I'll run a Kickstarter and self pub in July.

Imbolc, if you translate it out of Irish, means 'in the belly' (though some like to translate it to 'butter in the belly')
The name pinpoints the reason for the celebration. Now the first lambs are born, the first fresh milk of the year is flowing, and the cows are in calf. Life revives.

Last year's crosses will be burned at noon today with last year's sorrows. This year's crosses are laid flat to dry, full of this year's blessings.
It will take time, but the stirrings of change are fizzing in the air and under the earth. The light is kindling. The darkness is dwindling.

Brigid's table is laid for the turning of the year. Milk for the fullness of life, hazelnuts for the knowing and whiskey for the inspiration. A cauldron full of possibilities in the form of this year's garden seeds. Her crosses, old and new, are laid. The door was unlocked for Her before dawn.

May Imbolc bring three things
The wit of the bard
The strength of the craftsman
The tenacity of the smith
To imagine the work
To begin the work
To see the work through
May there be a flame within you that is undying

Tonight is Saint Brigid's Night, and tomorrow is Imbolc, the day of the Lady of the Spark. It's the night to feel change in the air, the day to feel spring stir beneath your feet. Let the fires be lit. Pour the milk and whiskey. The winds of change are blowing.

The days are dark. But dawn will come. Today the year is turning. Seeds in the earth are stirring. People are raising their heads. Time for change.
