I've seen quite a lot of articles in the last few months (by people over 60?) about this, at the same time I've seen plenty of young people reading physical books on trains (and in bookshops and in libraries). It's almost as if this pearl clutching might be, well, a bit off the mark.

Thanks for the recommendation. Thanks also because I might do a quick re-edit and mention that this book exists! Can I use your recommendation?

Thanks. Yeah, I ummed and ahhed about that because they kept talking about Blake Snyder's 'Save the Cat' rather than this variation. However, it's no spoiler to say I found Snyder's book interesting, but not entirely useful. I think with this nudge I'll put this on the list as a follow up.

Side note: I know nothing about cats, so on the alt text I've just written 'orange cat', but is that a particular type?! I had a search online, and I think it is an American shorthair.

Plus, I found the Cornish Rex quite striking or a little unnerving. I'm not sure...

On Saturday, I'll be posting my bitesize 25 min. episode on 'Save the Cat' by Blake Snyder. It was mentioned several (total = 3, maybe 4!) times by novelists at Harrogate Crime Writing Festival this year, so I decided to give it a read. Can a screenwriting book really help a wannabe novelist?
The front cover of the non-fiction book 'Save the Cat - The last book on screenwriting that you'll ever need' by Blake Snyder. On a plain white background an orange cat is holding on to a rope with it's front paws.

I'm so happy to share this, I only discovered it through following someone else. I've had a dip in and out since I started following, and it's fascinating stuff and, more importantly, valuable work. Definitely worth a follow!

Well, isn't that just the definition of health and safety gone mad? That loin cloth must be far more impressive than it looks.

You just need to pass it off as every bottle had a particular valuable memory attached...the symbolism of binning two double wheelie bins of memories is a problem though!

I finally got to 'Rosy and John' on my list, and it was great. I wasn't sure, considering the size (not a good way to pre-judge a reading experience!), that it'd be an interesting addition to the series but it certainly is. I'm putting together a bitesize episode on it. Thanks for the suggestion.

My three questions were definitely waffly because I often change my mind half way through recording that bit, but I was struck by how often you start describing situations with odour. Anne's favourite flowers. The opium cure. The morgue (obviously!). Wyndham's own odour. Is that conscious decision?

I'm quite new to Blue Sky. I didn't know I was supposed to make sense. I might need to leave if that's the case...

Plus, anyone who believes and commits to queues were with you (and Bill, the till guy) earlier this week.

She led such a full life of such impact, it leaves me silent with both respect and awe.

I'd 100% recommend it. Anyone who listened to my episode about his novel 'I Only Killed Him Once' knows I've never even seen an episode of 'Stranger Things'! Definitely worth a shot, even if your only knowledge of 'Stranger Things' is that it involves teens, monsters and stuff. Is that right?!

Thanks! Every episode I put in three questions that I would ask the author if I was interviewing them. After I've published it on Saturday, I'll post them here! Now I'm going to have to recheck the audio to make sure the questions aren't completely naff...

On Saturday, we'll be taking a look at 'Smoke and Ashes' by @radiomukhers.bsky.social. It's a journey! Starting with me going on about my history curriculum (e.g. Is it possible to get too much Tudor history? Yes, yes it is!) Ending with how much the story reflects the state of the UK in 2025.
The front cover of the novel 'Smoke and Ashes' by Abir Mukherjee. The cover has a reddish tint and shows and man running down a street towards us. Behind him there are signs of an explosion with smoke coming out of various buildings. Judging by the man's clothes and those of the people nearby and the man's colonial pith helmet, this is not a modern day image.

Not the most relevant point, but from what I remember about the film it seems really weird this poster is trying to make all of them look sexy. Admittedly, there is no effort needed with Halle Berry and the late Heath Ledger. No shame on Billy Bob, obviously but, well, you know...

Thanks for sharing this in particular. It was a bit of a revelation, and certainly thought provoking. I never considered writing what you actually want to be the scariest thing, but it's true. I guess it makes you more vulnerable if you fail, I don't know...I'll have to pick away at this thought!

Thanks for drawing attention to this. I never knew about it, so I visited it yesterday. It's a lovely place.

*away. Does reading widely help spelling?!
outoforderbookclub.bsky.social
This is certainly one of the reasons why I started this podcast. I persuade myself not to write on a fairly regularly basis, by telling myself I don't have the 'right' vocabulary for this or that genre. Reading widely (I'm hoping!) will take aware some of those nerves!

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 881:
If you’d like to broaden your vocabulary, read. Read widely, and often. That way you’ll absorb new language organically and use it naturally…

This week's podcast is here. I'm be looking at 70s 'spoof of a spoof' spy novel 'The Loo Sanction' by #Trevanian. It's a strange book, in fact, the Dr Evil figure is named Maximillian Strange, so it's not subtle either. Join me on the oddest read so far.

Out of Order Book Club: The Loo Sanction (1974)
This week, I'll be looking at 'The Loo Sanction' by Trevanian. In this episode, I probably say the word 'smut' a little too much, I wonder why a 'spoof of a spoof' can have a contemplative ending and ...

It's a terrifying insight into what they consider "acceptable speech", or what they want the law and everyone else to believe is "acceptable".

Setting aside the book covers, though I agree on that, there are some amazing titles here. They are just intriguing enough to pique a readers interest, and make you want to pick them up off a shelf.
