Anxiety feels like the tool deployed by the low mood to say, “let’s not do that.” Doing something against the wishes of anxiety is extremely difficult, and it becomes most difficult when it comes to communicating with another person.

During these times, it becomes difficult to do things that are usually enjoyable, even though it is known that the mood might improve once those things are done. The reluctance is higher. Anxiety almost always appears alongside low moods.

I have been misusing the word baseline ever since I learnt it.

As a South Indian, hearing English and seeing people choose it over Hindi feels like a breath of fresh air (something we probably won’t get in either city anyway).

Doesn’t that signal that people are becoming more empathetic, and that (hopefully) those who are discriminated against are getting more agency and importance?

It’s becoming difficult for me to watch these scenes. As a society, we claim to value children’s lives above adults’—at least that’s what I used to think. But now I realize not all children are seen as equal. The world places much more value on a “Western liberal baby” than on a baby from Gaza.

The whole energy of the scene shifted—and rightly so. Kids should have nothing to do with any of this.

The stereotyping doesn’t end there. As an Indian, I’m “supposed” to know Hindi. The sheer lack of knowledge about South India is astonishing. Privilege here doesn’t just blind people to injustice — it also narrows their imagination of what India even is.

Sitting in a theatre during The Kashmir Files and being scared to even go to the washroom as chants of “Jai Shri Ram” filled the hall.

These same “rational” people go silent when Hindus and the state are discriminating, jailing, or beating up Muslims. The hypocrisy is sickening.
