I've heard more than once that a nun's habit includes a wimple because the Scholastics had determined the Immaculate Conception had occurred via the ear (perhaps a rather literal reading of the Annunciation?)
Any idea if this is post-Reformation libel, like angels dancing on the point of a pin?
