1k followers! 🤘 For anyone finding us, OVGA is our love letter to all the great illustrators that created box art and brought our games to life. Beyond collecting original art, we're researching and documenting as much of this history as we can! Our starter pack of likeminded folk:

Here's the original line art for Katsuya Terada's #PrinceofPersia piece. I'm not sure its ever been scanned. This is from my copy of Rakuga King 寺田克也ラクガキング which I've been meaning to de-bind for better scans anyway. This is at 600dpi but I did it at 2400dpi & will upload it later

I don't believe the artist has been identified. The original image is by a Japanese artist (I think Kazumi Kakizaki) and then the image you asked about I believe was redone by a UK artist with the design firm Khartomb. However the specific artist that Khartomb hired remains a mystery

Me and @retrogamingpappa.bsky.social had a chat with Roger Dean a couple of months ago, and today we published our interview. Among many things, we spoke about the cancelled Black Onyx game he was working on with Henk Rogers.

Sad to hear about the passing of the Michelangelo of Movie posters, RENATO CASARO. The Man painted so many iconic posters, specially in the 70s/80s: CONAN, TERMINATOR, DUNE, TOTAL RECALL, DANCE WITH THE WOLVES, BLOW OUT, FLASH GORDON, RAMBO, NEVER-ENDING STORY, and the list goes on and on. 1/2

Preliminary box art for Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge for Super Nintendo (LJN, 1992). Even though the final was done by John Romita, Sr. this prelim rendered in inks was done by comic book artists Tom Brevoort and Alex Saviuk comics.ha.com/itm/video-ga...

I doubt it ever was planned to have different art than this. If you have the license and your game is leaning on that IP to make sales, using the iconic imagery with Arnold makes sense (to me)

Agreed! And Ken's work is frankly a much better painting

My restoration of #PrinceOfPersia's artwork by Katsuya Terada used on the cover of the #SuperFamicom and #SuperNintendo (PAL) releases. This is a v2 of my previous work adding missing bits at the top/bottom using different sources, applying the usual upscale/clean/retouch combo.
Prince of Persia clean artwork by Katsuya Terada used on the cover of the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo (PAL territories) releases. Image depicts the prince wielding a sword with the princess by his left side along another woman holding a dagger. On his right side one of the bosses can be seen. Jaffar is on the background, left side, with a menacing look, while at the bottom a skeleton can be seen, and our little white mouse friend right in the middle.

Figured it out! Those initials are MD and the artist is UK illustrator Mark Duffin. I reached out to Mark and he confirmed. Mark also did the Atari ST box art for Tempest

Mark Duffin has also been credited for illustrating the box art for Speed Hawk and for Jeff Minter's Photon Storm

As a big Sega guy, I'd love for the original art for the game box or ad art to surface

Turns out those initials are actually MD and the artist is UK illustrator Mark Duffin, who also did the Atari ST box art for Tempest, though Mark confirmed for OVGA that neither original painting was ever returned. Mark said both were a rush and had to be done overnight!

Ha, whoops! Good catch. The NES/GB Sunsoft release is indeed called Return of the Joker, and the Genesis game, which I believe is a port, is titled Revenge of the Joker

There is a visible signature on the U.S. releases of Mindscape's WWII game Into the Eagle's Nest. Can't quite make it out, but it could start "Au"

This appears to be a UK release of the game, so I imagine that the illustration was also British. I suspect this is one we'll get to the bottom of!

Fun to see this! It's a new image for me but as I research art more broadly I'll keep an eye out for any other pieces initialed ND
