Thank you! I have struggled with joint pain in my hands for a while now and I want to see if practicing drawing makes it better or worse. It should be interesting regardless :)

But I digress.

I love beautiful machines. Intricate amalgams of mechanisms cooperating for a purpose. When a machine works a certain way I naturally ascribe it life. I personify objects that were crafted, not made, so living in a world that is full of boring technological objects is frustrating.

Innumerable boring, characterless cars form the backdrop of the world. It affects us. Are photos of the streets of yesteryear too steeped in nostalgia for us to agree that cars used to be prettier?

They used to be worse too, though. Even less safe, efficient, comfortable than they are now.

Mundane cars offend me. Mundane technology offends me. That craftsmanship and ingenuity are reduced to a manufacturing process optimised to make money offends me.

Technology and art should always coexist.

How dare you produce something solely for money, not thinking of its beauty?

It is wrong.

I hate cars but also I love cars. They can be such beautiful, evocative machines and they are a fascinating cultural phenomenon. Unfortunately they are also dangerous, inefficient, and hugely damaging to our environment. But wow they can make me smile.

The sight of a beautiful machine elevates me.

In some ways its form is dumpy and odd. It sits a little too high, it looks... stout. A lot of the details aren't quite right. But as a vision, as a whole, it makes an impression in a way that very few cars do.

It is a bygone time's vision of the future, which makes it suit the film perfectly.
