1 of 4 new chapter, new page! this chapter is titled, "...and the Deepsleep Sea". this panel shows Randy the twelve foot Fresh Garbage Spirit performing a magic spell while muttering incantations to open a portal back the Ever-Changing Brambles. in his arms the Bean Sidhe, She Who Until Recently Combed Her Hair, struggles to escape. 2 of 4 Deirdre sides up to Aestre and declares on no uncertain terms, "i'm Going with you". "but Deirdre," says Aestre, "Zöe has not come back, yet!" 3 of 4 "don't argue!" says an undeterred Deirdre. "My children are more self-reliant than i could have ever guessed. and you are too weak to go alone!" Deirdre is of course correct as Aestre accepts this fact dejectedly. 4 of 4 "i'm not afraid for myself, but for others i worry" Aestre says, which is pretty much my own anxiety in a nut-shell. "and i'm one of those worrisome "others"- let's go!" Deirdre commands. she takes Aestre's hand and walks into the newly opened portal... alt-textra: new chapter and all that good stuff! i got a doozy of an ending in store for this one with lotsa good lil twists if'n i may brag so for a second. i really like how Deirdre's stubbornness came out in this page. ten years in a cave she's really not taking anyone's crap anymore.

i try to get a sheet out of a new bristol pad and cuz of the way it was glued the whole cover ripped off. the sheets are not that great of quality this time, either. usually strathmore is better than this. 😑

anyhoo, pen is ready for inking the next chapter. hoping the first pages up this weekend!

1 of 4 Athrú, happy to not getting killed turns to the young child to reveal his name which has until now offered a special protection placed by Aestre's magic. "well... okay... your name is Quinn, little guy" upon hearing his name spoken for the first time, a small familiar white flowers pops into existence on his head! 2 of 4 Deirdre is not particularly amused and at first says nothing. Quinn, on the other hand, is ecstatic and says gleefully, "i'm a pretty flower boy, mama!" Athrú is surprised. 3 of 4 Deirdre walks straight over to Aestre, still weak from the near fading and waiting for the portal to be opened. "care to explain why MY Quinn has one of YOUR flowers?" Deirdre demands. "Ah." Aestre raises a finger, "that." she smiles, "i would not care to" "GAH!" yells someone off-panel. 4 of 4 in bursts Alisha now wearing a green cape beaming with excitement, "When were y'all gonna tell me i have pointed ears and green eyes, now??" she yells. "yay!" Quinn exclaims, "more pretty flower people!" "*continued..." reads the caption at the bottom. alt-textra: i'll give you a hint as to why Quinn seems to have a much stronger intuition about the world. the Lady didn't just break the promise thrice. 😉

1 of 4 Deirdre hugs Quinn tightly, Athrú resigned to his fate says, "Athrú will forfeit life as recompense for the awful deed-" "Shut up!" snaps Deirdre, "No one's life is to be forfeit! i am not out for blood" "Mama?" says Quinn. 2 of 4 "—i'd like it if Athrú said my name so we can all go home" Quinn says stepping away from Deirdre. "little guy, no!" Athrú protests. 3 of 4 Athrú holds Quinn's shoulders kindly saying "Your name is special and you need to hear it from somebody who truly loves you" "but Athrú—" Quinn rebuts "you do love me!" and Quinn is correct, though Athrú himself knows it not. 4 of 4 "AND I LOVE ATHRÚ!" Quinn says in all caps. "You do? Why?" Athrú asks, for obvious reasons. Deirdre leans against a wall, arms folded, "seems your fate's been decided" she says. alt-textra; Quinn seems to know a lot more than he ought to and of course there's a very good reason for it. Kabouter are already precocious creatures in my story, but Quinn is exceptional. perhaps tomorrow's page, the last page of "She Who Combs Her Hair" will shed some light on that.

1 of 4 After having been decided that Radny the twelve foot tall fresh garbage spirit ought to open the portal, Deirdre the gnome witch turns to Grace the feckless human and discretely says, "Thank you for not suggesting me, my last attempt at opening a portal didn't go so well, y'know" and true it didn't. she died. she got better. "I Tiggum" says Grace butchering the Irish almost as bad as the author has done in the past. "it's just "Tuigim"" explains Deirdre. and true enough! the word Tuig means to understand and adding the 'im' at the end indicates that it is the speaker who understands! this isn't important to the story, just a little diversion into the wonders of the Irish language. 2 of 4 and speaking of diversions, a little familiar púca, Athrú who was previously known as Gránna emerges from around a corner. "Miss Deirdre..." he says. her expression suggests she knows this is indeed concerning someone very important to her. "we've been in the other hall— your tall lanky child said to wait, so Athrú waited." and of course they refer to little q. who is indeed a tall lanky child. 3 of 4 Deidre follows Athrú down a darker corridor, the previous room having been lit by Deirdre's magic. "Athrú is so very sorry for everything..." he says. 4 of 4 "Hallo, Mama..." says a little Kabouter peeking just over a wall a la Kilroy. "He does this a lot" Athrú explains. alt-text stuff; there is much more to Quinn that i could spend an entire second volume on, and maybe i shall as he himself will need a secret name along with Alisha. in fact i've been rethinking the title of the sequel and i think it ought to be "Her Secret Name" and i'm not telling you why but that's the perk of reading the alt-text! 🙃💜

"yes... *phhh... i'm so sorry" 2 of 4 Aestre explains, "when i took that oath it was sealed with a curse that if i lingered in Druidia i would fade. i did not expect it to happen so fast. that water you gave me— from the sacred pond, was it? i have a little more time now, maybe a quarter of an hour" 3 of 4 "i need a portal opened immediately, and i am too weak to do it." Aestre says. "Alisha can- but she's getting dressed," little q. explains her sudden and inconvenient absence. 🙃 "this can't wait" "hey!" says a voice from off panel. 4 of 4 "have Randy do it!" Grace says, "i bet even with a cranky banshee in tow, he'd still be slick as snot and twice as fast!" the very cranky Bean Sidhe mutters some curses as Randy holds her tightly. She Who Until Recently Combed Her Hair, is none too happy about being held this way. "Nice thinking, Fox!" Deirdre lightly elbow bumps Grace in the ribs. alt-text extra... Deirdre would be a little more cautious opening portals again, for obvious reasons, now. besides, it'll be fun to draw Randy opening a portal in an upcoming page. that one might have to be a full-pager.

1 of 4 little q. rushes over to Aestre who is slumped over, the flowers that grow from her hair have fallen out and her colors have become muted, "She's fading!!" they yell. e_ just behind little q. asks, "How can SHE be fading?" which is a fair question seeing as she is the Queen of the Fae. "i don't know," says little q. "but i know what can slow it!" 2 of 4 yelling behind them, "Waterskin in my napsack! get it!" Grace turns quickly, "Got it!" Deirdre and e_ look on in shock. 3 of 4 Deirdre hold Aestre's head as little q. poors a liquid from a waterskin into her mouth. "little q. what is that?" Deirdre asks. "Water from the sacred pond of the Salmon of Knowledge. it saved Zöe" little q. explains. 4 of 4 Aestre revives quickly, eyes bloodshot. she grabs little q. by the collar of their shirt yelling, "a portal! someone needs to open a portal, NOW!!" she says using the double exclamation point. "mom!" little q. yells back. alt-text extra; as can be seen, breaking the oath is no small thing. the Tuatha now called the Oaken Folk are indeed potentially dangerous, and the ancient kings, as all kings are wont, don't like seeing their regimes questioned. kings are kind of assholes like this, you see.
