There was a demonstrable drop in Aus literacy when we switched from phonics to the whole-word model. We have since switched back to phonics and what do you know, literacy is improving.

I have had so many thoughts about this over the last decade and change. Tumblr got close to being the quintessential site for fandom but nothing has ever, or will ever, match fandom on livejournal, ca. 1999-2007.

The world might have hung onto long form journaling a bit longer with LJ, purely because it was familiar and people are change-resistant. But faced with strikethrough and all the other shit that led to the LJ exodus, fandoms splintered and regrew in places that demanded less from their users.

The problem with dreamwidth was, and remains, firstly that only a tiny portion of lj’s userbase went over to it, and secondly that it was new at a time when short form socmed sites were rapidly gaining popularity.
