I’m old and have a lot less at stake than many people. If I get arrested, I won’t lose my pension. If I get shot, I’ll lose 10-20 years of arthritis getting worse and worse. I have no reason not to rouse a little rabble.

I know, but I live in Texas - which everyone says is “purple” but it also willingly turned over its info

I get your point, but they don't even have to be that coordinated to cause a lot of organizational trouble, to whit: www.brennancenter.org/our-work/res...

I keep wishing there was some version of the Good Fight on right now, reacting to the current insanity. I did see that the creators have a new network series about tech executives. I don’t know if it’ll have the same bite though

I remember hearing it as a slur in college in Iowa in the 80s - then at some later time heard my grandpa say the part of Cedar Rapids where he grew up was called “Bohunk Town” - I wasn’t from Iowa and always thought it was a midwest thing

Too lazy to Google, but in AZ it was called “Longhorn cheddar” and now I’m not sure if it was real

so much b.s. -- I imagine a lot of white folks are like me. My "people" moved all over the place, barely could keep a farm, married/bred widely for over 150 years and didn't even manage the one imperative they tried, "being Catholic". What does that make me? Where am I going to be sent back to?

I have to chime in. When there were retrospectives on him after he died, I hoped someone would mention his voice work in Disney's Rescuers Down Under (seriously!) I was subjected to it on repeat as a young mom. Repeated listens just amplified what a great performance that was!

There’s a Sandhill crane refuge not far from where I live. My favorite sign of fall is their burbling sounds far overhead as they pass.

It was always explained to me as an ROI thing (which I had to look up because back then not everyone had MBA-brain)!

Over 20 yrs ago, abandoning foreign lg grad work for MA in Tech Comm at tier 3 State U, was depressed to have a cohort largely hostile to humanities, cheering on their demise, and unmoved by my despairing protestations of “so only the wealthy get to study literature now?” It’s been around awhile.

I love The Third Man every time I watch it.

oh, read more carefully now...you say you're describing (representing) a sign in the UK. In that case, no period.

If it is a "copy" of writing (like showing a letter) no period. But for text that is copyedited IN the U.S. for a U.S. publisher, then you'd put the periods in. For the same reason you'd be corrected to "color" not "colour" and "buses" not "busses" (again unless it's a representation of text).

I’d argue that even as she’s aged and grown stouter, she is still quite beautiful

We do use a pretty marked prosody to get a “that” (perj) in English

Old officemate, former Marine, told me that you don’t see a lot of “perfect specimen” enlisted folks because, he said, if a person has other assets (athleticism, super intelligence, $$, bankable looks, etc) they usually have better options than enlisting

counterpoint: I was texting a dinner menu and had typed "pasta al barese" but the phone corrected it to "pasta Al barese" Probably shouldn't discuss Arabic place names either.
