We had a discussion on here recently about my teenage sci-fi obsession, the now fairly little known The Saga Of The Exiles by Julian May. They are pretty hard to find these days but eBay eventually came through. Now to see if they still stand up…

And the second! I’d NEVER describe my mother like that except in affectionate good humour

Dear Rory,
I saw your interview on Saturday Night Live and I have to say you made most of your points well and came across as articulate and reasonable. I particularly liked that you remained good humoured throughout.
However you are incredibly naive if you think the image of you in drag and with the name Pantibliss is going to promote the cause of marriage equality. That image will be used again and again by the opponents of marriage equality to advance the argument that gay people are not suitable to be parents and that their relationships are not to be taken seriously. And no, straight people will not be able to separate your stage image from the very normal image of you we saw on Saturday Night Live.
Back to your interview, I don't wish to hurt your feelings but one of the things I would strongly object to is your characterisation of gay people as "flaming queens". If you want to describe yourself as such off you go but, as a gay man that is as homophobic and offensive to me as anything "the usual suspects" have written about us.
The opponents of gay marriage are very clever. The thought that you have gifted them compensation and given them a very good head start in this debate, makes me sick to my stomach.
I know you are not to blame for that -RTE just got scared, apologised and paid up. But interventions in this debate have to be very carefully thought out because the opponents of marriage equality are far more organised, have lots of money, access to legal advisors, and supporters in powerful positions.
So Rory I’m asking you please ditch the Panti image until after this referendum and if you’re going to make any more interventions in this debate do so carefully. No gay person will thank you if this referendum is defeated and you are mentioned as one of the people who helped the No campaign.

Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing this brief letter to tell you of my family's concerns
and deep disappointment about a programme you broadcast on primetime radio on Bank Holiday Monday of this week. RTE is the station we always listen to and really enjoy the vast majority of programmes you present.
On Monday afternoon we listened with increasing disbelief as we
were assaulted on the airwaves by a "show-offy", arrogant, mean-spirited, unfunny, self-indulgent Pantisocracy who engaged in a relentless anti-Catholic diatribe which included slagging off his own mother to the point where we changed channels to get rid of him. We are not a hugely religious family, and have been deeply upset in recent years by the scandals which have involved the church, and we commend you on your part in revealing these issues.
We also know many, many people, including some religious, who
give their whole lives to unselfishly helping others, and they and the hundreds of thousands of people of good faith ( and good people of faith) deserve better than to have their values and beliefs sneered at and belittled by this individual.
We have no problem whatsoever with his own life-style and
profession- good luck to him- but please don't present him with a prime-time broadcasting opportunity to insult and belittle so many of your loyal listeners. Our confidence in RTE has been shaken by this. We hope that wiser counsels will prevail in future.

I'm sure his mother, despite his radio caricature of a tweeded, demented tea-maker, was a very decent, generous, hard-working woman who, like our own parents, came from the generation who had nothing but gave everything. An old phrase, not much heard anymore, seems entirely appropriate to Pantisocracy. He has "no manners". You should not be facilitating him, never mind encouraging him.

Here’s my uncle’s headstone and photo. He did not want to go, he signed up for the peace corp to avoid going, but he got got kicked out for being in an interracial relationship and was shipped out anyway.

Frederick J Carlson’s headstone. It says it was born in Nov 1944, died in Sept 1968, making him 23 years old.

My mother’s older brother, a fair skinned auburn haired young man with green eyes. He’s in his army uniform.

We had to put our rent through a LETTERBOX IN THE KITCHEN WALL that went into the garage that he pretended he didn't live in. And if he thought everybody was gone he would start making noise and coughing and walking around loudly
