There used to be a program - Bushlight - that set up renewable energy systems in remote communities (and trained the locals in how to maintain and manage them). Presumably cancelled by the Abbott government on the basis of being successful

Bushlight was CfAT's renewable energy program running between 2002 and 2013, which installed over 130 renewable energy systems across remote Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland.
