On October 7th, learn how to communicate genetics topics to classrooms and informal settings with with @robomalley.bsky.social from @pged.bsky.social!

This is for teachers and all other kinds of educators.

RSVP for free here: givebutter.com/8TVNiA
DNA floats in the background of a texty event flyer that says "Personal genetics engagement in classrooms and communities, Learn about genetic advances and about how to bring conversations about ethical, legal, and social dimensions of genetics into classrooms and informal science learning. Tuesday October 7, 2025, 12pm EDT. brought to you by Skype a scientist and the personal genetics education and dialogue program. RSVP at linktr.ee/skypeascientist

Whereas what I took away from that conversation was "read more science fiction and go to more parties. And that will help your scientific career." 😂

Really enjoyed talking about mathematical biology (and a little about being an associate dean) in @parmvir.com's Biology in Numbers podcast on the 2025 @smbmathbiology.bsky.social annual meeting!

Bolero superfans, don't @ me! 🧪

Being interviewed for a podcast is as fun as nerve wracking (as you all can hear! 😅), but... what an experience! And what a lovely mashup of stories from amazing people. Thanks @parmvir.com for letting me be a part of it!

This year's @smbmathbiology.bsky.social meeting provided us with another delightful mashup of math biologists (and me) talking about science, and in Amy's case, ultra-running and conference coffee ☕
Thanks to all the excellent attendees who agreed to speak with me for Biology in Numbers.

I do regret not asking @parmvir.com about her ultra-running in the podcast: open.spotify.com/episode/7rpv... but even better, she's interviewed here too!

I will never be able to think about your interview without picturing you in a field surrounded by Danish cows...🐄

You're way too generous Paul. But I appreciate interviewing and being interviewed by you :)

This was fun and great to learn about the research (and trivia) of colleagues from #SMB2025 this summer in Edmonton. Thanks to @parmvir.com for hosting a great podcast 🙌 🧬 🔢

OK, that looks way more difficult than the races I've done!

Kudos to you Amy 👏🏽

And thanks again for agreeing to be interviewed 😀

I love listening to the #CancerInOurCommunity podcast from @moffittnews.bsky.social COE but for these two episodes I had to wait until I was ready. I am glad I listened and thankful that there is a podcast that tells these powerful stories and illustrate the role of family members as care givers

BREAKING: Incredibly, Tucker Carlson accuses Trump of using Charlie Kirk's murder as a rationale to revoke our 1st Amendment. "If they can tell you what to say, and they're telling you what to think, there is nothing they can't do to you."

The remarks weren’t “about Charlie Kirk,” they were about how this administration is using Kirk’s death as an excuse to shut down critics … and they responded by proving him completely correct.

This is so depressing.

"it is easy to see that given an orderly society and a functioning economy, democratic politics may become a low priority. The answer to the question “will ‘the people’ tolerate authoritarian rule?” is yes, absolutely."
gregggonsalves.bsky.social
The point is that many can live quite normally under the thumb of authoritarianism. Yes: many suffer and suffer now but large swaths of the American public chooses to be clueless and it’s not difficult. This is how the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper. www.vox.com/the-big-idea...
Life in authoritarian states is mostly boring and tolerable
Americans have an overly dramatic view what the end of democracy looks like.

now is the time for every media personality to stand up and speak out, because what this shows is that nothing will save you

they’re coming for all of you, unless you’re a true believer your days are numbered and your bosses are eager to comply

do something you can be proud of on your way out

Conference organizers: If you want people who work outside of academia (or financially secure company), to give a talk at your conference bc you value their expertise, it's unreasonable to make them pay for registration. Artists/Nonprofit folks do not have the funding to pay you to share expertise.

That's making my head hurt just thinking about it! 😂

I too tend to apply my nerdy capabilities to my hobbies, including running. So I love this little bit on converting miles to km while you're in the middle of a race. Although depending on how much I'm suffering, the even most basic arithmetic can be a challenge 😂

It's a little-known fact that Fibonacci was a keen marathon runner.

Okay, he wasn't but he could be an invaluable help if you are a keen marathon runner.

@joshuabull.bsky.social is very keen.

I very much enjoyed thinking about how to present this introductory guide, as well as speaking with IMO folks yesterday about #SciComm.
And I may have included one or more melodramatic messages to impress upon people the need for more and better communication 🫣
Two slides from a powerpoint presentation. The first opening slide reads "From the collaboratorium to the community: a quick guide to science communication".
The second slide includes text that reads "Or how I learned to start worrying and love the scicomm". There's also a cartoon from an artist called Dave Whamond. Two scientists are doing experiments while a third stands at a podium with a speech bubble saying "We had our funding cut by DOGE, but not before our studies showed that 4 out of 5 people" Meme of a dog at a table with a mug on it. The dog is surrounded by flames and says "this is fine".
