The meaning @pkrugman.bsky.social flags here is the legacy of labor and unionization. Coal became a “good job” because of unions. Yet the very politicians who wrap themselves in coal’s charisma spent their careers undermining labor. Sobering and scary that the Dems are unable to exploit this.
Look, I get it. Job are about dignity as well as money, and being a coal miner used to mean something. But that's why empty promises to bring coal back play politically, while even a generous buyback scheme probably wouldn't 5/

Libraries feel like something about which we could very easily be saying, “Remember that place where you could borrow books, for FREE, and return them when you were finished?” And kids would say “What?? No way!” And yet there they still are, despite everything we’ve become, existing. Remarkable.
