The first Silmarillion map. Drawn by Tolkien on an unused page from a University of Leeds examination booklet.

Yeah. Reading accounts of the first months of Barbarossa was a fairly eye opening experience, both academically and personally.

That latter fact seems monumentally unfair, doesn't it

Lethal skewering this, in particular this paragraph skewering the idea that Handswortg is an integration failure when it is a multi-ethnic integration success story.

As Mrs Merton might say “what is it about this 9% white ward that led you to frame it as an integration failure?”

Its 'presents lessons' based on both the last two years of conflict and the significant rise in anti-semitism in Europe, including the UK, that has accompanied the return of right-wing populism as a political force

There is a fundamental paradox here that Stephen describes, which too few comrades are willing to take into account.

Cameron and Osborne did generational damage to the fabric of British society - even without Brexit - and were rewarded for it with a full majority in 2015. They weren't begging the electorate to reward them for 'not breaking our manifesto ledges on tax'.

But anyway, convincing voters that you're making proactive policy changes to make the country a better place also requires a) some ideological guiding principles to tie everything together and b) the ability not to constantly step on rakes.

The structural changes that the government have made could be really positive in the *long term*. But are Labour seriously expecting voters to reward them for this in the here and now?

'That's a nice bubble you've got there, sure would be a shame if anyone was to happen to it...'

The government absolutely does have a comms problem, but most of these policies are, fundamentally, things that the general public won't actually see any direct, short term gains from.

From Peter Kellner's latest substack:

Of 560 Labour voters present and recent past (switched since '24), *not one* said any of the following when asked about gov's best achievements

Some obv will be conscious of these things, but Labour still has a big problem, he writes: "voters aren’t hearing"
