💡Remote work alone cannot eliminate gender inequalities, but it represents a significant step towards greater labour market inclusion of mothers.

➡️ The results indicate that working from home can meaningfully ease time constraints
faced by mothers, supporting their continued labour market participation and helping to reduce the motherhood employment gap.

🔹 mothers’ working hours also increased in a meaningful way, essentially closing the gap between desired working hours and actual working hours.
🔹 importantly, the results depend on children’s age and household circumstances.

Using data from the EU-LFS and a shift-share IV method, they found that:
🔹 as WFH increased, so did the likelihood of mothers being employed full-time, which led to a 25% decrease of the employment gap between women with- and without children in the EU since the start of the pandemic.

We also found that providing increased flexibility for all employees and implementing diversity measures may mitigate the likelihood of care-based discrimination.

🔹Across our studies, care responsibilities present a significant challenge to activation, hiring, employment, and extended working lives, especially for women.
🔹We found a gendered parenthood penalty where mothers, especially single mothers, face significant disadvantages in hiring processes.

The conference was organized in cooperation with Bocconi University and aimed to discuss key issues such as as minimum income schemes, breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty, and financing anti-poverty measures.
