As Canadians, we like to think we’re strong and free. But, when it comes to the wealth gap, we’re looking more like America Lite—better manners, but almost all the inequality.

In Canada, top 1% of wealth holders hold 24% of total wealth.
Meanwhile, PM Carney has an ‘austerity budget’, which will impact the disadvantaged.
Patriotic Millionaires Canada, which I am a board member of, estimated that a 3% tax on wealth over $100-million could raise $25-billion annually.

“While working Canadians are paying higher rates than their ultra-wealthy fellow citizens... the government is currently considering a so-called austerity budget that is almost certain to make these problems worse.” - @sabivm.bsky.social and Hon. Ratna Omidvar

Canada's exploding wealth inequality requires tax changes
Our current tax code is not asking the wealthy to reinvest in our economy, and that failure is weakening services and programs working Canadians may use to get ahead.

BC friends, important piece by @iglikaivanova.bsky.social

She writes: BC’s own source revenue—taxes, fees & royalties—has plummeted from 19.2% to 15.4% of GDP over 25 years. This drop represents $16.8 billion in foregone revenues annually."

Tax cuts drive the deficit; progressive tax ⬆️ needed 👇

BC folks! Outstanding piece here by @iglikaivanova.bsky.social, co-ED of @bcpolicy.bsky.social.

BC has a revenue problem, not a spending problem

The solution to BC’s fiscal challenges isn’t spending cuts. Instead, BC needs progressive revenue measures.

Opinion: B.C. has a revenue problem, not a spending problem
Experience from early 2000s shows that underfunding public services and failing to address poverty leads to higher economic and social costs

The US is a huge flashing warning sign on how a tax code fueled Oligarchy can form!

Canada has many of the same problems, but we have a chance to change before it's too late! It just takes taxing the ultra-rich.

Our American peers have just introduced a plan to ensure no one pays taxes until their basic cost of living is covered, and make the mega-rich pay for it!

If the Carney government wants to fund tax cuts for the lowest income earners, they should tax the rich, not cut vital services.

WATCH: We just kicked off the #First45TaxFree campaign: a tax cut for working people, funded by millionaires.

Because full-time work should cover the basics—without taxing people into poverty.

Our tax code values money over sweat.

It values already being rich over earning a paycheck.

It values unproductive and even extractive investment more than actually working for a living.

Until that changes, the tax code will guarantee wealth inequality in this country grows.

The wealthiest Canadians pay lower tax rates than what the average worker pays.

Why? Because our tax system taxes employment income at a higher rate than passive investment income.

Who does Doug Ford want to cut taxes for? Massive corporations that are price gouging consumers? Rich investors already getting a sweetheart deal?

Instead, why don't we fight tax havens and tax the ultra-rich and make investments that actually help working Canadians.

Ford said he would be appealing to Carney to lower taxes to “create the environment” to help people and businesses weather the tariff storm.

Through 5,000 years of human history, the same cycle repeats: Elites extract huge amounts of wealth and power, a small oligarchy makes poor decisions in their own short term self interest, and what's left of society collapses.

Can we learn from those mistakes?

Opinion: Why do we keep letting Canada’s ultrarich use tax havens to stash wealth?
Carney needs to end a near-universally loathed loophole that allows the wealthiest and largest corporations to avoid paying billions

If we were going to build a sky scraper, we would never make the bottom shaky and unstable and throw all the weight on top.

So why should we build our economy that way? If this pattern continues, the whole thing will topple over.
