Don’t get sucked into the whataboutism. There doesn’t need to be competition between public health advances - each are important & critical in making people live long + healthy lives. Anyone in public health will tell you this. Alas, the folks doing damage only know how to rage bait for self-gain.
TWO THINGS CAN BE TRUE AT THE SAME TIME
Sanitation and other
hygiene-related advances in public health like sewage control, waste water
filtration and treatment did absolutely significantly increase life expectancy.
But so did vaccines.
A recent study estimated that vaccines have saved 154 million lives globally since 1974, equivalent to a rate of six lives every minute.

A poorly conducted study, submitted as a correspondence, claims to show increased cancer diagnosis one year after Covid-19 vaccination.

In truth, the quality of science in this supposed study was abysmal and filled with major methodological flaws.

Did a Korean study really show that the
COVID-19 vaccine increased the risk of cancer?
Absolutely NOT

I am half way through reading @joho.bsky.social ‘s new book and it should be included as historical evidence in national science libraries & archives. I really hope down the road we read this and find ways to ensure none of what we saw during the pandemic is ever repeated. Riveting read.

The sequel to We Want Them Infected is done!

COVID killed 1.2 million Americans while vaccines saved millions.

Yet, disinformation superspreaders were empowered, where they are taking a wrecking ball to science & medicine.

How did that happen?🧵

Bottom Line:
This letter is not reliable and should not be used to make any judgments about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines.
COVID-19 vaccines have been used across the world and data supports that their benefits far outweigh the risks.

The study argues that the reason they looked at this was because the SARS-CoV-2 virus may be oncogenic. However, a virus is very different from a vaccine.
Add to that the very critical methodological errors and the fact that the 'study' was accepted about five weeks after submission.
The issues - general
• The study argues that the reason they looked at this was because the SARS-CoV-2 virus may be oncogenic. However, a virus is very different from a vaccine. A virus can replicate and infect many cells through the body, damaging them. A vaccine cannot replicate and spread in this way.
• The very premise of this study lacks merit.
Add to that the very critical methodological errors and the fact that the 'study' was accepted about five weeks after submission.
This raises serious concerns about how rigorous the peer review process was (if it was even undertaken), given all of these glaring issues.

Lots of other co founders, such as healthy vaccinated bias resulting in more proactive screening and diagnosis.
The issues - confounders
• Those who vaccinate are more likely to go for routine checks and screening. This means they are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer. If you don't go to the doctor you dont get screened and can't get a diagnosis.
• Thyroid cancer has been rapidly increasing in Korea since 1999 band is the most common cancer in Korea. Some of this has also been attributed to increased ultrasound screening and potential overdiagnosis, particularly since 2015. Similarly, gastric cancer is another prevalent cancer in East Asian countries like Korea, and national screening programs have made early diagnosis more common.
• These concerns are in addition to the basic confounders and baseline characteristics not being corrected for.

The study seemed to show an increase in Cancer diagnosis ONE MONTH post vaccine, which is truly the most absurd thing we have ever read.
The issues - timelines
• Cancers typically arise due to multiple factors over a period of years. Even with known cancer causing chemicals - like benzene - the cancer typically occurs 5-30 years after exposure. A one year follow up makes no sense in the timeline of cancer development.
• Sabina has been involved in many cancer studies, and cancer trials never have only 1 year follow-up. Typically it is at least a few years and for some cancers, sometimes up to a decade.
• What is even more bizarre is that they measured cancer incidence one-month post vaccination - and said it was increased. This is far too early for cancer to occur and be detected. This indicates serious issues with their methods.

There are many major flaws in the study, that has left us very confused on how this was even published.
Results and Lack of Full Data
• The study supposedly found that the risk of thyroid, gastric, colorectal, lung, breast, and prostate cancers significantly increased at 1 year post-vaccination. This increase was actually seen one-month vaccination, which is truly the most absurd thing we have ever come across (see next slide).
• Of note, however, this was not a full published study, all we have is a correspondence to the editor.
• We don't know if the study corrected for things like smoking, diet, alcohol use, family history and other critical confounders that could impact and skew the data. Because this was not mentioned in the letter, we have serious concerns that no corrections for confounders was undertaken.

This was a large-scale population-based retrospective study in Seoul, South Korea and estimated the cumulative incidence and subsequent risks of cancers in the one year after COVID-19 vaccination.
The study
• This was a large-scale population-based retrospective study in Seoul, South Korea.
• The study estimated the cumulative incidence and subsequent risks of cancers in the one year after COVID-19 vaccination.
• It included data from 8.4 million individuals between 2021 and 2023, obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance database.
• The participants were then categorized into vaccinated or unvaccinated groups based on whether they received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“While working Canadians are paying higher rates than their ultra-wealthy fellow citizens... the government is currently considering a so-called austerity budget that is almost certain to make these problems worse.” - @sabivm.bsky.social and Hon. Ratna Omidvar

Canada's exploding wealth inequality requires tax changes
Our current tax code is not asking the wealthy to reinvest in our economy, and that failure is weakening services and programs working Canadians may use to get ahead.

In Canada, top 1% of wealth holders hold 24% of total wealth.
Meanwhile, PM Carney has an ‘austerity budget’, which will impact the disadvantaged.
Patriotic Millionaires Canada, which I am a board member of, estimated that a 3% tax on wealth over $100-million could raise $25-billion annually.

There actually isn’t good data that confirms this to be honest, but it’s an easier one to substitute with acetaminophen so it’s more of a cautious approach. But very very few and super small studies on this.

Nancy Mace went on Bill Maher to tell people to take ibuprofen instead of acetaminophen in pregnancy. This is extremely dangerous advice. I explain here what the risks are.

Not only is the science clear, but there is global consensus on this.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is safe to use as a first-line therapeutic option for fever and pain in pregnancy when medically indicated, at recommended doses, & used for the shortest duration required.
NOT ONLY IS THE SCIENCE CLEAR
That there is no causal link between acetaminophen (Tylenol) use in pregnancy and autism or ADHD.
BUT THERE IS GLOBAL CONSENSUS
ACOG, SMFM, SoGC, ENTIS all agree that in utero exposure to acetaminophen does not increase risks of adverse neurological outcomes in the child.

Was on Global National today talking about the misinfo coming from the US about Tylenol in pregnancy. I wish I could've included the clip where he stumbles repeatedly to pronounce acetaminophen, yet doesn't consider whether he or his ridiculous team are qualified to be making these statements.

Wait, so after months of all this insanity over the COVID-19 vaccine access in the US, the CDC ACIP basically landed very close to where they already were before???

Looks like they will be recommended for
*all* 6mo+ based on individual/shared decision making. NO prescription required.
