yeah, not a botch. The way I always explained it either as a ref or commentator is that the finish isn't when the ref's hand hits the mat, it's when they call for the bell - sometimes their hand hitting the mat is just gravity at work, and it's on them to make the call, and that's what happened.

this was definitely an NXT thing years back, and given NXT of ten years ago is ground zero for a lot of modern US women's wrestling, I'd wager it's the starting point for this trope too, particularly with Triple Paul's penchant for stage-managing and directing entrances down to the finest detail.
