when I read, unless the author goes out of their way to describe a character, I don’t pay that much attention to race. I’m sure I mentally assume they’re white, but if I find out later, they’re not, I am not bothered by it.

I’ve never resented a protag *because of their gender*, other reasons, sure. 😜

My guess is it is a timeline thing. I feel sure the numbers should be higher. If I was home I’d check my library & do a quick tally.

i grew up reading Andre Norton as my default author, and I would estimate half her protags were women. They were all competent in their own field, so I have no problem with female POV.

Charlie is the protag, but the amazing Til might help to bring in the women.
