I was thinking how it must be bewildering for Orcs, caught up in marches to war for specious reasons, involved in pointless battles that have nothing really to do with them, but a mad tyrant's desire for power, and I got this Tolkien-inspired parody. @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com
Defendant’s Statement by the Third Orc From The Back at the Siege of Helm’s Deep I look back on it now, and I don’t really know ‘ow it ‘appened. I was sort of desperate, I guess. Living in an ‘ovel at the side of the Sea of Nurnen, in the land of Mordor – You must know the place? Mordor, where the shadows..? No? TV reception down that way was – well you only get one channel “Mordox News” – 24 hour, rolling. That’s how I learned about elves. All that long ‘air – both males and females! Can’t tell ‘em apart. Not right, is it? And Gondorians, coming over ‘ere, taking our jobs. (I never actually saw one, over ‘ere, though.) And the ‘obbits. Terrorists. Smuggling things in. Well, we saw ‘ow that turned out. Mummy-Orc died when I was a nipper. Couldn’t afford ‘ealthcare, even though dad worked like a slave. Well, ‘e was actually a slave, so… But we never got a break. And in Gondor, they were living it up. No-one ever explained to me why they were coming here taking our jobs.. (cont'd) One or two said our problem wasn’t Gondor, it was the dragons and Dark Lord, ‘oarding the treasure I said: “One day, I’ll be a dragon. You just ‘ave to work ‘ard enough. This is Mordor. The land of dreams.” (Well – nightmares – same thing) I mean, why would dragons ‘oard gold from us!? They’re on our side! We never got a sniff of gold so I don’t reckon they ‘ave any. Otherwise it would trickle down. The news said things were getting bad: Middle Earth overrun with elves. The Dark Lord said: “Get out there on the streets. Make Mordor Great Again.” It felt really good to be marching in an army All of us together. Expressing the will of the orc-people. We felt invincible, like history was happening around us. I wasn’t so convinced when people started getting killed. I never wanted that. But you know, we were doing the right thing. And then, when the Dark Lord ran away...well...
