Recent shot of Leonard Peltier clowning with Kevin Barry McKiernan, an ally and the only journalist present at the 1975 shootout for which Peltier was framed, at Turtle Mountain reserve following Peltier's release.

Leonard Peltier clowning with journalist and longtime ally Kevin McKiernan at Leonard's homecoming celebration on Turtle Mountain reserve. an innocent man, jailed for 47 years on false fbi testimony. Biden commuted his sentence minutes before leaving office.

even mediocre gardens are good gardens. kind of like sex in that regard, i guess. wishing you all much joy and victories of any size in your gardens this year! (still buried in snow here, but spring will eventually arrive in Québec.)

wheelbarrow by pond edge, by Heron Hetzler.
got this steel wheel for 10 bucks at auction. never got a flat tire after that. important stuff when you're homesteading. #offgrid #sustainable #organicfarm #photography

friction hitch and biner, ca 2017, shot by my daughter at our homestead. she foot-locked 60 feet up a maple to hang out and sketch. other pic is me showing her the ropes 28 yrs ago. see large form. #trees #climbing #arborist #photography #nature #homesteading #offgrid

20-quart stock pot saw endless use. had to bolt handles on, as aluminum rivets were eroded by pickles, tomatoes, salsa. Pic by Heron Hetzler. #homesteading #canning #sustainable #photography #offgrid

black raspberries, aka black caps, my daughter's favourite. she took this shot. we had a huge patch, and i made lots of jam, canned some whole. a wonderful treat in the winter! #homesteading #fruit #photography #nature #gardening

my son's cat, Fionn mac Cumhaill, found emaciated behind a mall. probably why he ate nonstop. #cat

i roughed out the opening for this window with a chainsaw. the only tool i knew how to use. trim boards salvaged from someone's trash. #homesteading #offgrid

in the beginning god said let there be candles but the kids dripped wax all over. then came one used panel and a junk car battery. eventually we had this 1kW array. many panels were free, one from 1970s still works. you dont need big bucks to start.. #solar #offgrid #homestead #sustainable

another homesteading shot. my daughter Heron took these or there'd be no pics from those days. thanks, Heron!
behind the sunflowers, which are garden volunteers we didn't weed out, is the back of our hodgepodge solar array.

this workhorse never went anywhere unless there was a load to haul. that's what pickups are for, picking up stuff. they're not for getting places. that's what cars are for. took this off the road every winter.

another shot from our homesteading days. fun fact: you can get endless free mulch-hay if you make friends with local dairy farmers, and have your own truck. one year i got 50 of these round bales. used them all.

tire chains on galvanized bushel-basket. things that look like junk to most people can come in handy when you're homesteading. you had to be careful on this ladder, though.
