Pat Brodie and I have a book coming out in September w/
@brisunipress.bsky.social

Started with data centres and energy and turned into a story about monopoly tech, empire and Ireland's (under)development in the capitalist world system.

One of the most inspiring things about
@catherinegalway.bsky.social is how she, and the campaign, has connected with younger people. She's winning the meme game, but also winning over people through her compassion, confidence and honesty.

We constantly hear about the need for Ireland to invest in defence to protect privately owned subsea cables passing through our marine territory from unspecified threats.

Yet, actual planes carrying actual munitions used in an actual genocide continue to pass through our airspace unchecked.
pbresnihan.bsky.social
This has real purchase in Ireland where ethnonationalism and a certain 'indigenous revivalism' overlap - disconnected from a Marxian economic analysis, Irish identity (whether language or a flag) can be appropriated and wielded to exclusionary and regressive ends.

This is a very good discussion w/ @priyamvadagopal.bsky.social on the different meanings and politics of decolonisation - in particular, the dangers of cultural decolonisation shorn of any materialist analysis of capitalist imperialism. 1/2

Another pro-militarisation article.

Ireland is neutral, why prepare for war?

Rather than investing colossal amounts of public money in preparation for war, we should invest in the real security of our citizens - housing, health, climate resilience.

The EU is preparing for war – is Ireland?
With a marine territory 10 times our landmass, and which includes much of the northern hemisphere’s critical subsea cables, Ireland's defence capabilities should be built around maritime capacity, wri...

We hear a lot about the so-called 'veto' that big powers have over Irish foreign policy when it comes to the UN Security Council.

In reality, the US holds effective veto power over Irish foreign policy due to our dependence on US multinationals.

Highly recommend this @upstreampodcast.bsky.social podcast with Chris Gilbert on Venezuela and socialist communes - communal forms of social production that form the basis of a socialist and anti-imperialist national project. And now under direct military threat from the US.

The Irish Govnt wants to allow large energy generators to provide energy directly to data centres. Ardian sees that.

"The company’s pioneering approach to combining hyperscale data centre development with new renewable energy generation, will unlock significant opportunities for growth in Ireland."

This is a good sign but most of Gavin's transfers will go to Humphreys and there will be a ramping up efforts to undermine Catherine in the next two weeks.

Don't just vote for Catherine, volunteer for the campaign - there are local groups everywhere.

When you hear BS about national security, think of the point that @pbresnihan.bsky.social makes here. Investing in solar and batteries for every home would give us more security than fighter jets.
pbresnihan.bsky.social
Thousands of homes still without power after a mild storm.

Every time this happens - and it will happen more often - remember the Govnt are more intent on buying fighter jets than investing in climate adaptation and public infrastructure.

Irish neutrality + climate justice.

I wonder if this was expressed as publicly owned, or socially owned, supermarkets would the response be different?

If we can't get the majority of people behind not for profit groceries (supporting local, sustainable food production), we're losing.

Should the government introduce state-owned supermarkets?
People Before Profit has proposed the introduction of state-run grocery shops.

Everyone knows that Catherine Connolly has more integrity than most politicians but the way she has responded to constant media scrutiny and attack with calmness, clarity and honesty is truly brilliant.

People all over the world, including Ireland, are raging because their Governments are standing by as Israel commits genocide and breaks every international law and RTÉ has this headline.

So glad to finally get my hands on this - @kaiheron.bsky.social,
@kmilb.bsky.social and @bertrussell.bsky.social are some of the clearest and sharpest thinkers on post-capitalist futures, green transition, commons, social movements and eco-socialism. Essential reading.

'We may not agree with what they're doing but at the end of the day we depend on the US'.

Variations of this argument are made all the time by Irish politicians and analysts.

If not genocide, what would the US have to do before they questioned this subservience?
pbresnihan.bsky.social
Yes of course! We're in Dundalk on Friday 21st November and Connolly Books in Dublin on Wednesday 26th. Also in Derry and Belfast in early 2026. And hopefully more talks if people interested.

Environmental damage is putting European way of life at risk, says report. But why are Europeans not doing much about it? Because it's the "European way of life" that's creating the environmental damage.
So the point is not to save it, but to change it.

There is a direct line between US military planes in Shannon and the US military pageant in Croke Park yesterday. Hosting their military in any way makes Ireland an enabler of US-Israeli genocide in Gaza.
