VHS is making a comeback in a big way
There's a guy I used to work with who would talk like this and it became very apparent that he never understood what you were telling him

Wait so what happened because we used to do this (the houses not the elevators) with seats catalog houses. I live in one!

he gets the shit beat outta him and then his friends go "damn dude why'd you bail" he doesn't tell them what happened and then everyone moves on. His absence was not significant!

This scene literally never comes up again btw. Totally irrelevant to any character or plot development

in fact the State will Crush them better than the Article will Convince them

I mean there kinda is. The place where this tech would genuinely be good to use is "inside the city limits of the top 50 american cities" for which is there already existing speed limit data for every inch of roadway
December 15, 2025 at 3:41 PM
Wait that's so much darker though
December 14, 2025 at 1:50 PM
I mean it does bc here's an image of the video on bluesky dot app with no indication that it is AI.

If someone posted a clip from Jurassic park claiming it was real, the comments would indicate otherwise. AI doesn't get that! This has no context other than itself and that's a meaningful distinction
December 14, 2025 at 5:34 AM
It matters if you go into the video expecting it's real or not!
December 14, 2025 at 5:26 AM
The difference though is that you go into, say, Jurassic Park *knowing* that it is special effects and didn't happen. The thing I resent about the AI videos is that it intentionally obfuscates the reality

Speed camera discourse esp in cities is so funny because every time it goes:

"I think we should automate ticketing for speeding"
"That's just a cash grab!"
"Okay but people can just not speed?"
"Ohhhh my god do you not get the point of The Car??"

investing a B2B SaaS solution where my fire alarm has an "off" button that turns it off for 15 minutes when I press it
December 12, 2025 at 5:52 PM
So what's different from this versus the car? It's the same thing!
December 12, 2025 at 5:50 PM
Not any more than "the government already knows where you are because your phone has location services on 24/7", like we already crossed that bridge
December 12, 2025 at 5:00 PM
"geofenced speed governor" is the biggest no-brainer and makes every single person see red if you suggest it

I am biased here because when I read the book it clicked so strongly because not only was I in one of the jobs he specified, but I knew and worked with several of the other archetypes.

There's a summary that goes "not every job is 100% necessary and some exist for silly reasons." Pretty true!
December 12, 2025 at 1:02 PM
I think I/P is the largest example of it, but it's manifested in other ways too. He was an anti-filibuster guy on the campaign trail, now he's a "vote with republicans" guy in the Senate
December 11, 2025 at 9:36 PM
I'm getting tangential but this isn't actually graeber's thesis with Bullshit Jobs; Online has turned it into "email jobs are bullshit" but his actual thesis is that within an organization, many specific jobs are superfluous or unnecessary, not that "construction is real and white collar isnt"
December 11, 2025 at 7:47 PM
yeah straight up doesn't happen in the books
December 10, 2025 at 7:17 PM
Even criticisms like "she wrote an irish character who loved to blow stuff up" is misattributing a things from the movie to the books
