Tonight we finished The Valhalla Murders, a Nordic Noir from Iceland. I've seen a couple of spotty cop shows from Iceland, and this is not one of them; top notch work here.

It's a gripping thriller, about the awful topic of child abuse, but very well handled and […]

[Request for recipe advice, meat related]

Due to poor planning i’ve ended up with two 500g parcels of pork mince to use this week. A batch of sausage rolls is a staple for the Teen Eaters, but what to do with the other? (The Teen Eaters say two batches of sausage rolls is a GREAT solution) […]

I've been enjoying a few good Polish TV programs this past year, and finished another good one last night: Murderesses.

Good characters, tight action sequences, baddies, corruption, a dysfunctional family mystery. Excellent […]

TIL about the OctoBass as a result of my random YouTube-live-music feed stumbling into a performance of Gounod’s “Messe Solonelle” which is pretty good and, well, has an octobass in the orchestra.

A riddle for @theguardian.com books page.
p.s. My new book 'Physics for Cats' is out this week in bookshops and online. Details at www.tomgauld.com
Title: One door leads to freedom, the others to certain death. You may ask one question.

Image: Three guards with shields and speard stand in front of three doors. One guard sits at a folding table working at a typewriter, his shield and spear leaning against the wall.

Caption: One guard always tells the truth, one always tells lies, and the third always tells an entrancing story that blends reportage with imagination in an attempt to reach a deeper authenticity by moving beyond the narrow categories of fact and fiction.

On the recent recommendation of @troberts, I watched the movie Shadow last night. It's a slow-paced, deeply serious, wuxia drama with just enough action / fighting to keep it interesting.

A very artistic movie, hugely atmospheric. Not monochrome, but bloody close! A political thriller, with […]

My brain keeps trying to come up with alternate lyrics for an unChristmas carol, The First Koel. Possibly accompanied by slide whistle. 🤪😂

Yes, the koels are currently calling, loudly and often, why do you ask?

From Adam Sharp on Bluesky:

After our picnic at Speers Point Park, we walked to the bus stop near the pub to catch a bus up to Hammerbarn. I lost count of the number of time a magpie flew into the tree next to us, a worm in its beak each time. Here's the nest it was poking them into, in a […]

A tangle of brown dried twigs makes up a nest in a bright green tuckeroo tree next to a wooden power pole. Blue sky and power lines above. You can see bunches of green, unripe tuckeroo berries that will turn a dusky yellow when ripe.

Always look in the stormwater drains. This great egret (white heron as we call it) stepped out of the drain under the Five Island Bridge to hunt in the water flowing into the lake.

Always look up too, especially at lamp posts next to water. Maybe don't stand […]

A tall white bird with a yellow beak stands in water draining through rocky ground with mangroves dry grasses. We usually call it a white heron, but it's name is great egret. The majestic Australian pelican stands on a lamp post watching all below (it's at a boat ramp). Blue sky above, casuarina trees catching the breeze behind.

A couple of these yachts don't seem to have this "mooring" thing down properly. Shouldn't they be mostly *above* water?

#lakemacquarie #yachts #sunk
A couple of boats at mooring, blue lake, trees and land beyond, and… is that a mast sticking out of the water next to that mooring buoy? Uh oh. Any mast above water is a fine place for a shag to perch on. Yacht owners generally don't like shags perching on their masts and painting the surrounds, but I think this yacht's owner has bigger problems.

Walking from Marmong Point to Speers Point Park yesterday, lots of birds to be seen. Ducks, shags, moorhens, herons (3 types), pelicans, white-bellied sea eagle, swallows galore, seagulls, magpies, noisy miners, bell miners, parrots, …. prolly more. Magical place […]

A pair of wood ducks swim in brown water in a stormwater filter pond, with two very fluffy ducklings. Another pair of wood ducks swimming in a shaded part of the stormwater pond, with a dusky moorhen. Red bottlebrush flowers and green grass overhang the pond on either side. Dusky moorhens and ducks on the sandy bank of the stormwater pond. A vine grows up and through a tree above, walking pathway and road behind. A little pied shag (cormorant) swims away from the pebbly "beach", hunting for fish. Blue lake and moored boats behind. If you look carefully, there's another shag in flight, towards the boats.

It’s not the crash that wakes me up at 4am. That’s survivable. I worry about what the American leadership will do when they suddenly find themselves in charge of a very poor country with the world’s most powerful military. #auspol #finance
