Venezuelan men sent to CECOT prison in El Salvador by the U.S. are speaking out about the horrific abuse they suffered. Despite portraying them as "the worst of the worst," the Trump administration "knew that the vast majority did not have convictions," says reporter @perla-trevizo.bsky.social.

For months, we had been talking with Carmen, Lina and Doris about the void their sons' detention in #ElSalvador had left. They wondered whether they were eating, if they were cold. Were they alive?
Following the men's release, these families sat with us to talk about what they lived through.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson said the U.S. is not responsible for the conditions of the men’s detention in El Salvador.

And a DHS official insisted the men were all members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

The Salvadoran government denied any mistreatment and pointed to videos of the men leaving the prison as proof they were in good shape.

Several of those interviewed said suicide crossed their minds. “I’d rather die or kill myself than to keep living through this experience," 39-year-old Juan José told us he thought at times. But he found solace in the Bible, the only book they had, and his faith.

"The prison director told us: Welcome to hell, where you enter alive and leave dead," said Wilmer, when describing the torture and beatings he endured over four months.
The 39-year-old had come to the U.S. to help pay for his mother's cancer treatment.

Andry, 40, wondered if he would ever be able to embrace his mother again. He tries to make sense of how the U.S. government accused him of being a gang member and terrorist.
“We are a group of people who I consider had the bad luck of ending up on this black list,” he told us.

In March the Trump administration sent more than 230 Venezuelan immigrants to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador, calling the men “some of the most violent savages on the face of the Earth.”

@propublica.org went looking for the truth to their stories — one by one.
