In the introduction to "The Werewolf at Dusk and Other Stories," author-illustrator David Small wrote in January 2023 about one of the stories in the collection, a retelling of Jean Ferry's "Le Tigre Mondain" or "The Tiger in Vogue."

While brushing snow and ice off my car this morning, my feet slid apart on the slick pavement. My legs widened into an A-frame position.
I remembered that State Farm ballet class commercial and thought, "More Bundlé, less Savé," as I tried to wriggle upright.

"Bruce reminded me of Ben Franklin. He was an artisan thinker." – Douglas Whynott, The Sugar Season
Economical characterization. Artisan thinker? I want to be one. Doug, my creative nonfiction professor at Emerson College, still influences my writing today.

It may or may not be childish. There will only be one, apparently, but it will be a doozy if I can help it.

Watched Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga before midnight and the arrival of 2025. With the uncertainty and looming madness of next year, the film seemed on point.

Completed another chapter on my #nonfiction WIP, Barons, Brewers, and Bootleggers: A Social History of Beer in Missouri. Since March 2024, 33 chapters written. 62,593 words. Lots of research, interviews, and writing.
It's validating to pause and assess progress. Final push in spring-summer 2025.

Voyage of the Damned is a brilliant tale by @franceswrites.bsky.social. Intriguing murder mystery with ample twists and turns, fascinating characters who may be allies and/or adversaries, lovers and/or killers, on an emperor's ship bound for a fateful voyage.

Join me at Vine Street Brewing in KC, Dec. 12th, 6 PM, as the brewery releases Henry Armstrong Lager. I'll read my essay Gloves and Glory: The Story Behind Henry Armstrong Beer. Learn about the boxing champ, the mysterious original beer, & ties to the Vine District, race, and WWII-era beer history.

Has anyone watched Mononoke: The Phantom in the Rain on Netflix?
Visual tour de force. Every scene is utterly vivid with color, pattern and detail.
Plot takes full concentration to follow. #Anime flies fast and furious. Dialect and dialogue is a bit much. Will take repeated watching to absorb.

I'm teaming with Vine Street Brewing Co. for this beer release event. I'll read my essay about triple crown boxing champion Henry Armstrong - namesake of Vine Street's lager and the original 1930s Henry Armstrong beer, and subject of a chapter in my next book.

Snowy trees in KC's River Market park. Exposed trees stand, winter sentinels ignore the morning parade of dogs trotting past to conduct their "business." Humans, hand enveloped with plastic bags, remove evidence, contract cleaners. Tree limbs, always stiff, shrug at creatures with two or four legs.

Snowy overcast day in Downtown Kansas City, ashy gray skies a canvas, buildings flex their rectangular physique. Brown leaves cling to branches on trees, seeking to avoid eviction. Snow blankets the ground, a discarded quilt left by a bored teenager who fled the scene.

Disembodied, beheaded orange pumpkins displayed at a farmers market stand. Ol' Jack o'Lantern long since disappeared into an October evening. Fluffy white snow covers their bald noggins, undignified toupees on display. Uncarved, their rigid but blank faces remain expressionless but silently furious.
