indeed, meritocracy seemed to work for quite a long time. These days, having personal or professional merit seems to be antithetical to any kind of political advancement. You have that with Trump; we have that with Farage and also the Conservative Party.

Hardly - opened in 1875, this large station still has 7 platforms, some sub-divided. In the 1960s it was the gateway to North Wales, with six signal boxes! Even now, it connects to Manchester (including airport) Liverpool, Wrexham, Holyhead, Crewe and all points to London.

Their own interests were often directly opposed to leading a well run NHS and many have done a lot of damage to the organisation, while being very well rewarded for their “contributions”. 2/2

It is important to distinguish between administrators and (senior) managers. Administrators are essential to smooth running; senior managers less so. The latter were mainly brought in by politicians to do various government’s bidding. 1/2
