Part 2 of my #cdnhist thread on why it's bad history (and otherwise problematic) to say "“In the 1950s, high incomes were taxed at 90%, and government had abundant revenue. Our top rates are too low now. Raise them. Problem solved.”

As a Cdn tax historian, I find this popular idea irritating. Equality of sacrifice? Sure! Abundant public revenue? Yay! But how?

I guess it's a good thing that Canada's billionaires are racing to buy the HBC Charter to share with the great unwashed. Perhaps, with their newfound love of #cdnhist, they can now donate $ to provincial and national archives to make our history available to all.

In their decision, Justice Strickland specifically relied on our expert report to inform the Court. As noted by Witten Law, the decision helps to entrench a Nation's ability to develop and uphold their own Election codes. Witten's full analysis can be found here:

But sure if the end goal is to create an asset that will provide investors secure dividends for the next 20-50 years by deferring and nationalizing environmental, social, and Indigenous debts, yes the #oilsands are clearly a winner.
peterfortna.bsky.social
And if that wasn't enough, #oilsands companies now expect the #cdnpoli to subsidize any industry attempts to mitigate their environmental and social footprint. How quickly they forget that it was the Liberal party that spent $30b buying their last pipeline. share.google/p74gFVNMg1Hp...

And this does not even considers the impacts #oilsands have had (and continues to have) on local Indigenous groups that have been forced to adapt to danger, reorienting their whole way of life (contrary to treaty promises protect by the cdn Constitution) share.google/prY7Ut3deEal...
The Athabasca River, Indigenous Knowledge, and Adapting to Danger
Downstream Indigenous communities distrust tailings management due to decades of contamination, health impacts, and government-industry dismissal of their concerns.

Sector layoffs have been part of the ugly truth in the #oilsands for ten years +. Mergers, acquisitions & "cost efficiencies" have led to thousands of layoffs and the hollowing of the business. Human impact is real as Ft Mc homes are worth half what they were in 2024.

Isn't it funny how #oilsands corporations are rewarded by the investing class. The #ableg really needs to reconsider their benefit as they nationalize and defer billions of dollars of environmental, social, and Indigenous liabilities. share.google/KwC6gRKDYWVo...

Question for the #cdnhist universe. I've got a manuscript that's an awkward length (25,000-30,000 words). I know the practical thing would be to either lengthen or shorten the ms, but I'm curious if anyone has experience publishing a short book? And if so where? Feel free to respond or send me a DM
